On the conservation of perpetual creative energy

Every fifth grader has heard of the conservation of energy, the principle that says energy can not be created or destroyed but only transformed. This is also partly true of creativity.

Creativity is the ability to store emotions, to capture feelings, to create things that inspire and perpetuate creativity in others.

Any artist can tell you how emotionally draining the act of creating can be. Whether it’s writing, painting, sculpting, acting or composing music.

But the beauty of the creative arts is that once you channel your energy into the task of creating the energy stays where it is no matter how many people draw inspiration from it.

Imagine how sad the world would be if creativity followed the same laws as physical energy. A world where after you finished a book the words were gone from the page until you used the stored energy to create a painting; which in turn vanished after someone became inspired from looking at it.

An actors craft carries the same amount of creativity whether his audience is a thousand or just one. A musician can inspire millions with one song out of just one night of furious composition, a few months with paper and pen can become a hundred years of literary enjoyment.

And these artists drained of emotion and low on energy can pick up someone else’s creative work and become inspired all over again.

“Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.” — Carlos Ruiz Zafón – The Shadow of the Wind

Go now. I send you out into the world to create, inspire and dream.

Now, if only we could power our vehicles with creative energy. Ah . . . the power of imagination.

Publication Validation

Hooray! I got my copy of Cross & Cosmos: year one in the mail today.

Anthology Cover Art

Naturally the first thing I did was flip to the contents page to find out what pages of the book my stories are on. And the answer is pages 347-396. Pages 347-360 are my first TC2 (The Cross & Cosmos) story “Souls are Wild” and pages 361-396 are its companion story “Black Hat Magic.”

This blog post could be a completely selfish tooting of my own flute (an instrument that I do know how to play by the way) or this could be an opportunity to remind myself and you that I am just one of eleven authors in this anthology; author of only two out of twenty-two stories. A 49 page drop in a 453 page book.

So on that humbling note here are some of my favorite (not written by me) stories from the first year of The Cross and Cosmos.

“Christmas Time” By: Kersley Fitgerald (I love time travel stories)

“Power of a Name” By: Avily Jerome (Action fantasy adventure)

“Fungus Among Us” By: Grace Bridges (Who is studying who? the answer might surprise you)

“The Quest” By: J. L. Rowan (Fantasy epic featuring a telepathic animal companion)

Why these four out of all of the amazing stories and awesome writers?

They are all relatively short, they are all from the original first four issues of TC2 so you can go read them online for free HERE, also all four have sequels written only for this anthology so now you have to buy the book not just for my sequel but for these others.

I’ve just had stories printed in a book, what am I going to do next? I am going to read my new book and then write more because seeing your name in print is an instant shot of confidence.

Don’t forget to buy it here: http://www.marcherlordpress.com/bookstore/fantasy/the-cross-and-the-cosmos-anthology-year-1/

Cross and Cosmos: Year One

Yea the day I’ve been bragging about for almost two years is here! The anthology Cross and Cosmos:Year One has finally been published by Marcher Lord Press.

With amazing cover art:

Final Cover–Smallish

And Featuring stories by me:

Re-read my Faustian Western “Souls are Wild” and then read the sequel “Black Hat Magic,” written exclusively for, and found only in, this anthology.

“Black Hat Magic” highlights the world of 1870’s theater where a soulless magician shares the stage with a Shakespearean actress.

You can buy the anthology from Marcher Lord Press at this site:  http://www.marcherlordpress.com/bookstore/fantasy/the-cross-and-the-cosmos-anthology-year-1/

Enjoy

Family Fiction Create Romance Contest

Attention loyal readers (yes I mean both of you). I have submitted a short-short story (less than 1000 words) to FamilyFiction.com’s Create Romance contest.

What this means to me: I chance to be included in a Short fiction anthology of the top 200, or if I make the top 20 a $50 gift card to Christian books.com.

What this means to you: The opportunity to go to Familyfiction.com and vote for my story. you can find it here: http://www.familyfiction.com/short-stories/create-romance-2012/a-meeting-beneath-the-black-light/

Before you can vote you must first register your email address. The directions are at the top of the page.

My Story, “A Meeting Beneath the Black Light,” is very obvious from the title. Girl meets boy at a Halloween event where black lighting is being utilized. For those who require deeper themes in their fiction consider it the story of a lonely college student, who learns that being yourself is a little overrated and that maybe becoming something else is the easiest way to truly be yourself.

If you like it come back and leave a comment.

Blogaversary

What, you may ask, is a Blogaversary? Well one year ago today I started this blog and in that time I have written 36 posts had 208 views, 38 Comments, and have made about 200,000 excuses not to write and post something.

The background that I have used for the past 365 days (or is it 366? this is a leap year after all) is titled Koi. It is a simple background that captures the feelings of the beach evoked by the dolphin in my blogs title as well as providing a non-distracting, almost paper like, reading surface.  I rather like it.

I will try to post more this year and hopefully I will have more news about publications.

Thank you to everyone who has read my blog this past year, hopefully you found it interesting enough to come back and visit this year too.

Quoth the Avengers, “Assemble!”

Because I am over due for blog post and because I can think of nothing better to do and because this was like the worlds most awesome movie ever, here is a post of Avengers Quotes. I am not really sure that I am giving away spoilers or anything but if you haven’t seen the movie yet you might want to read this after you watch it. The jokes will be funnier at least.

There is only one God Ma’m and he doesn’t dress like that. —  Captain America (keeping the faith)

I did! I got that reference. — Captain America (He got it but how many in the audience did? I wonder . . .)

You know, the last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing above everybody else, we ended up disagreeing. — Captain America (I did, I got that reference!)

Hulk Smash. — Captain America (someone had to say it.)

And just so no one thinks that I’m crushing on Cap here are some quotes from the other Avengers:

That man is playing Galaga! Thought we wouldn’t notice. But we did. — Tony Stark (best part is that the man is actually playing Galaga)

I have a plan: attack! — Tony Stark (Always an excellent plan)

That’s my secret, Cap: I’m always angry. — Bruce Banner (hey that’s my secret too!)

Super-Heroes in New York? Yea right. — Stan Lee (That’s Irony folks)

These quotes were brought to you by my somewhat unreliable memory so you really should go see the movie yourself to make sure I got them right.

Works in Progress

Happy New Year.

There is just enough time left in 2011 for one more blog post. the only question is what should I write about?  A lot has happened in 2011. I started a blog! I started a lot of books ( you can read two meanings into that and both would be correct). I also started a new job.

Yes a lot of starting happened in 2011.  But not much finishing.

As a writer I do not lack for Ideas. I have so many stories started that it is often  hard to choose just one to work on.

So my New years resolution is to actually finish all of the projects ( the short stories at least) in my “Work in progress” folder.

Here’s an idea of what I’m working on:

“Much ado About You” — A short story full of Shakespearian misprision and conclusions jumped to too soon.  Shouldn’t take to long to finish I just need to know the legal consequences for accidentally faking a suicide.

“Expendable” — My love letter to Star Trek.  This is not a fan fiction I have created a new universe that has a different history and aliens. I want to say I’m almost finished but I have started over twice already and I will probably rewrite it yet again before I am happy with it. basically follows three “Red Shirts” on their first away mission.

“Recall from the Red Planet” — If you have read Left Behind then you can imagine what the rapture would do to a small community. Only this time the small community is a Martian colony.

“The Adventure of the Jewel Fence” — In 1900 Ohio a Sherlock Holmes Fan applies his idol’s methods to real life in order to solve his neighbor’s murder.

“A Merry Martian Christmas” — Yea this is the one about Santa Clause living on Mars.

That is just a sample of what I’m working on I have lots more but I think that these will be the priorities not that anyone can actually hold me to that.

Anyway hope you enjoyed 2011 may your 2012 be even better.

Christ is Christmas

You may have seen the various wall postings making their way around Facebook that tell you to keep Christ in Christmas.

The sad truth is that Christ never left Christmas. We did.

We leave by forgetting that Christmas is the birth of Jesus. By rushing and worrying and spending and wanting. When Christmas becomes “All I want for Christmas” instead of  “Good Christian men rejoice” then that is when we leave Christmas and actually kind of revert back to Black Friday (Hint: Not the same as Good Friday).

Christ-mas. See he’s still there. It is actually impossible for there to be a nonreligious holiday because holiday means Holy day.

What about Secular Christmas carols? Nope I’m sorry it’s still music that glorifies a Christian Holy day.

surprisingly it isn’t even Santa’s fault. We can’t even rightly blame the retail industry.

The real reason that so many people are forgetting what Christmas is, is because of this war that is being waged in the name of inclusion and tolerance. But these people, who claim to be all about not offending anyone, are too greedy to give up their yearly pile of gifts, so they tell themselves that the gifts are all that matter. Then they tell other people that it doesn’t matter what ancient beliefs started the holiday just give gifts anyway.

But the truth is that no matter what they believe every time some one says “Merry Christmas” they are acknowledging and condoning those ancient beliefs and the centuries of Faith that created the Holy day called Christmas.

So, Good Christian men rejoice, Joy to the world, “God bless us everyone,” and Merry Christmas.

Cathrine 🙂

Here is some recommended movies to enjoy this Christmas:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas — Cartoon or live action the message in this story is so important. “It came, It came, It came just the same.”

A Christmas Carol — whichever version you choose remember that it isn’t actually about celebrating Christmas but about living a better life all year-long.

A Charlie Brown Christmas — yea Linus knows what he’s talking about.

P.s. if this offended you then good.  Again I say Merry Christmas!

Weather Tis Vane to Comment

I was so excited when I first started getting comments on my blog but for some reason they were all in the spam pile. I am thinking, “What are all of these wonderful people who actually like my writing doing in the spam folder?” So I approved the comments and basked in the glow of positive feed back.

Then I looked closely at where the comments came from. Most of them seemed to be just regular blogs like mine. But they all had the word Weathervane in the title.

So I said ohhh kaaay and forgot it. Then recently I got some twelve or so comments in my spam folder at one time. They appeared to be from different people but when I clicked on them they all linked back to the same website. A website that sells weather vanes.

So I ask: Why is it that the only people who read my blog are Weathervane enthusiasts?

Am I prejudice against Weather Vanes?

No.  Weather Vanes are both decorative and functional. But you can’t blame me for seeing some kind of conspiracy. Can you?

Sorry if I offended anyone who left a genuine comment and honestly enjoyed my random musings.

This just happens to be what I’m musing on right now, though something tells me that this anything but random.  I think that there might be a method behind the spam filter’s madness.

So please by all means leave a comment. Feel free to praise my opinions or even disagree if you feel you must.

For right now I am going to leave the settings alone so that I can continue to either approve or disapprove comments.

I also realize that I am not very good at replying to comments. Sometimes though it is really hard to know what to say.

So here are a few comment guidelines that will get you approved and maybe even get a reply:

 1) Say something about the subject of the post that you are commenting on. Do you agree/disagree? Did you think that it was clever/lame/too clever by half? What is your opinion?

 2) Do not ask me tech questions. I am not a blogging guru. I am not good with the technical stuff; I just type and post that’s it. I have no Idea what an RSS feed is.

 3) Try to avoid having anything to do with weather vanes. I am on to you. (If you do have the misfortune of having a weathervane related site please pay close attention to point one. That should get you accepted.

 4) Don’t try selling anything. I might let through a recommendation but never a blatant ad.

 And lastly

If you really want me to reply to your comment you need to engage my interest. Have I met you before? Did you hear about me through Cross and Cosmos? Do you have an opinion on the post topic?  Does the post remind you of a book you read once? A TV show? Movie? I am more likely to reply to a reader who is engaged in the subject than one who just says, “I never thought about it that way before.” My opinion on the topic is already in the post so I guess I figure, “what else can I say?”

I hope that helps. Again sorry if I sounded mean that really wasn’t my intention. But maybe these few suggestions will help you decide whether ‘t would be vain to comment or not.

12th of July

Wow! I didn’t realise how far apart my blog posts were.

Sorry that I post so infrequently. In my defence the word Random is in the subtitle. I am going to try  posting about once a week from now on.

Yes this does count for this week in case some one was wondering.

I guess the problem is that without more focus I have been waiting for the “Random Musings” to come to me instead of actually putting effort into this project.  I am trying to change though. From now on I will Plan my “Random Musings.” Yes I too can see the problems inherent in the paradox of planned Randomness but I think I can make it work.

So until Next week. Hopefully. Maybe. If I get around to it.

Cathrine 🙂
