Silmaril Awards 2023 Villain Finalists and voting link.

Welcome back to the Nefarious Villain award. There were so many nominations and seconds that it took me almost two hours to read and tally them all. And to those of you who got sent to spam, I deeply apologize but worry not—your vote was counted. But it’s still busy and I may be hiding from Captain Hook so here’s another article I swiped from The Fantasy Times. I mean I they interviewed me for the article anyway the least they can do is let me share it.

Will Hook Make Waves Over Awards Snub?

Watching the contestants vie for the coveted Silmaril is always a fun aspect of awards season, but no award provides quite the level of entertainment as does the Villain award. Watching the worst of the worst get simultaneously offended at being nominated, and outraged at not winning is a highlight for many.

As a Journalist I hunted down the award coordinator and got the inside scoop on the counting process.

“Every blogger has their own process for keeping track of the votes. As a first time awards host it was interesting, Getting advice from veterans and also improvising my method. One Vetren award host shared a spread sheet that helped immensely. I have it set up so that I get an email every time someone comments on my blog. I waited until nominations closed and then went through my email deleting emails as I counted Nominations and seconds. That method combined with the spread sheet kept everything pretty organized for me. Then all I had to do was count the seconds to see who had the most. The top five characters to be ‘seconded’ the most times were the finalists.”

As I was taking my notes it occurred to me that there might be a flaw with this system. “What if there are Characters with the same number of nominations?”

“Well, it really only matters if the tie is between fifth and sixth place since only five characters can advance.”

I look at the blogger pointedly. “And was there a tie between fifth and sixth place?” I asked her.

She adverted her gaze and looked down at her watch. “It was a very close race and so many villains got nominated. So yes there were a bunch that got the same number of seconds. But it didn’t matter until it came to fifth place, so I used my one reader vote as a tiebreaker. I had to pick one or the other and I will not tell you who it was between because these are—well, their the bad guys and I don’t need one mad at me.”

She was looking really nefarious at this point and so I let the matter drop and we moved on to revealing the finalists for Most Nefarious Villain. They are:

Capricorn from Inkheart
Prince Humperdink from The Princess Bride
Lord Sero from the City Between series by W.R. Gingell*
Gnag the Nameless from Wingfeather Saga
Bonifer Squoon also from Wingfeather Saga

If you aren’t sure who any of these people are then click their names to be taken to related fan wikis.

*The City Between series has no fan wiki. (This is a grevious oversight and someone should correct it.) So here’s a run down on Lord Sero provided by the one of the other awards hosts:
Lord Sero may cause flowers and plants to grow wherever he steps, but that’s no cause to underestimate him — and misjudging his character could be the last mistake you ever make. He’s the epitome of a powerful noble fae — which is to say that he’s proud, ambitious, manipulative, and continually in the middle of at least one scheme to increase his own personal power and influence. And, like many fae, he’s not particular about who else he happens to hurt in order to achieve that goal — especially if they happen to be those whom he considers “lesser beings” (which is to say, not fae). He manages to have a finger in every pie, whether it’s the Fae Enforcers or the sinister Upper Management, in addition to the numerous other Behindkind under his direct command. His most notable recent scheme is his continual efforts to push his son into the Kingship of Behind so he can be the power behind the throne, and he’ll use any means he has to — whether magical interference, manipulating his son’s friends and companions, or plain old murder — to accomplish his ends.

As long time award followers will know, the nomination process is always open and can easily be double checked by any decently motivated individual so I assure you that this reporter has done her due diligence and confirmed the results. In doing so, I discovered that the tie for fifth place with ten “seconds” each was between Captain Hook of Neverland and Lord Sero from the City Between.

When I contacted the blogger again for comment, this all she would tell me: “Look anyone can see that Lord Sero is the greater Villain. I mean, Hook is just a Grumpy old man who’s being tormented by the universe’s brattiest child.”

When I reached out to Hook to see how he would react his only reply was. “Finally! Someone understands!”

2023 Silmaril Award Nominations [CLOSED]: Most Nefarious Villain.

After years of blogging I am finally a host for the premier award for fantasy characters.

The Silmaril Awards. This year there are eleven categories including one new one called Most Wayward Soul.

I am hosting the nominations and award for The Most Nefarious Villain.

I really wish I could share more. There is so much happening with the awards this year. But it’s labor day and I’m out of town for the weekend so I found this newspaper article to share with you instead. It’s from some obscure news site called: The Fantasy Times.

Shocking awards upset!

It’s that time of year again folks! The tickets are printed, the jewels are shined and the only thing left to decide is who is worthy!

That’s right it’s awards season here in the realms of fantasy, and society is abuzz with the latest news to come out of The City of Kings. Aragorn the King of Gondor has made a stunning announcement, all Narnia Characters are to be awarded honorary Silmarils.

This was announced at a ceremony where King Aragorn awarded a chest of Silmarils to the four high kings and queens of Narnia and bid them to distribute them to their citizens. (I pause to remind the reader that a lot of Narnians already hold Silmarils, so we can assume this won’t be a hard task.) Then when the Pevensies tried to bow to him Aragorn stopped them and said, “My friends you bow to no one.”

That’s the story folks, after years of the Narnians dominating the awards, it’s finally time for other members of Fantasy to get a chance at the most coveted award in all the realms.

Who will be victorious this year?

Your vote will decide!

What are the Silmaril Awards?

The Silmaril Awards are all about celebrating fantasy fiction. But whereas most awards go to authors or books, these awards go to the characters themselves!

Started in 2016, these awards are a four week online celebration of all that’s best in fantasy literature. There are several awards in various categories given every year.

The characters who receive them have to be from books in the fantasy genre.

Characters cannot receive the same award more than once. These are lifetime awards.

Past Nefarious Villain winners include:

Tolkien and now Narnian characters are not eligible to be nominated. Instead, they’ll be the ones presenting the awards.

Nominations are submitted in the comments of each of the host blogs.

Anyone can submit a nomination and you can second (and third and fourth, etc.) any number of nominations besides your own.

After the nomination period (lasting one week), the five characters receiving the most nominations will make it onto the ballot and you’ll have one week to vote. After the votes are tallied, the winners will be announced, one per day, over the final two weeks of the awards.

The dates for this year’s awards are:

Nominations week — Sept 4-8

Voting week — Sept 11-15

Awards ceremonies — Sept 18-29

Quick Reminders:

  • No Tolkien or Narnia Characters
  • Book characters only (Movies don’t count unless the book came first.)
  • Only fantasy characters are allows (No sci-fi, adventure, mystery ect…)
  • Leave your nomination as a comment State the character’s name and what book they’re from.
  • Second other’s nominations by replying “I second” to their comment.

Second Chance Superhero Cover Reveal

If you have read this blog for any amount of time, you know I am in love with the Superhero books by H.L. Burke. Her newest book releases next month and I am so excited! I was a beta reader for this book and it was amazing, So for this cover reveal I’m also giving you my honest opinion.

SECOND CHANCE SUPERHERO BLURB

Once a slacker, now a superhero, but will his ex buy the change?

Eleven years ago, Brayden Water’s high school sweetheart slammed the door in his face. Floundering, he found purpose first in the military, then by volunteering for genetic enhancements and joining the Department of Super-Abled as a full-time hero. Just when everything’s looking up, a family emergency summons him back to the hometown he gleefully put in his rearview. And guess who else is back in town?

Rachel Blum has had it with men in general. A single mom who managed to scratch her way through medical school, she’s accepted that she can’t depend on anyone … especially not her sometimes criminal baby daddy, and definitely not her high school ex who has popped up out of nowhere after a decade of radio silence. Dang, though, Brayden’s even hotter than she remembered, and there’s … something different about him now, though she can’t quite put her finger on what. Could he really have finally gotten his act together? Can she take the risk?

Brayden’s bitterness over Rachel’s rejection slowly turns to admiration and begrudging affection. But even if he drops the fact that he can now fly and shoot lasers out of his eyes, will she ever see him as anything but a small-town loser? When her son’s father starts causing trouble, though, Brayden realizes, she might just need a hero in her life after all.

A review from me:

Second Chance Superhero chronologically follows Accidentally a Supervillain, But officially this is book three in the Superhero Romance Project, and so technically follows Superhero Ever After.

This book is a swoony in all the right ways. Wholesome ways, hilarious ways, and heroic ways. I always love the Characters in this series, but these are especially sweet. Because they dated in highschool Brayden and Rachel have so much on page chemistry.

But of all the cozy superheroes — can superheroes be cozy? If they can this is probably the Coziest. The big fight, scenes are only in the beginning and the end. And only the villains in the beginning are a real threat. It really feels like a look at what real life would be like for a real superhero. I love superpowers but seriously, this book would be an easy special effects budget. (What are you waiting for Hallmark?)

Reading this book is like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket, lighting a scented candle, putting in a Marvel movie and pulling up your shopping cart of wine. (I promise that last part will make sense when you read it.)

This book was even better because of the amount of inside jokes that you get when you know the Author personally. I would tell them all to you — but you really had to be there.

As always, I read an early version of this book for the LOLs. Then I decided, all on my own, to inflict my opinion of it on you.

REVIEWS FROM EARLY READERS:

“Can superheroes be cozy? Second Chance Superhero is the novel equivalent of a Marvel movie, a shopping cart of wine, and a scented candle.”

— C.O. Bonham, author of Runaway Lyrics (That’s Me!)

“Great story! It’s like a Hallmark movie with a sci-fi budget.”

— Max B. Sternberg, author of The Rhise of Light

“H.L. Burke’s superhero books just keep getting better and better! (And they were amazing to begin with.) I have devoured every book in the series and eagerly await each new release. In Second Chance Superhero, I was sucked in to Brayden’s and Rachel’s plight, rooting for them to overcome their pasts, and couldn’t stop reading. No matter which book you pick up in this series, I highly recommend!”

— Michele Israel Harper, award-winning editor and author of Kill the Beast

Second Chance Superhero is a new Superhero Romance from author H.L. Burke and part of the longer, multi-series SVR/DOSAverse expanded universe of superhero fiction.

The book launches on September 9th, but you can pre-order it on Amazon.

It’s a tale of love after heartbreak, coming home, and second chances featuring a cocky but damaged superhero and the high school sweetheart who broke his heart but is now a single mom (and doctor)  haunted by her own past… also, French fries, a cart-load of wine, and surprisingly high number of dinosaurs.

Author Bio:

H. L. Burke has written more books than she can count—because she’s written a lot of books, not just because she can’t count very high.

Easily distracted by shinies, she has published in many subgenres including fantasy romance, Steampunk, and superhero, and always creates story worlds with snark, feels, and wonder.

Married to her high school crush, she spends her time writing, spoiling her cat, and supervising her two supervillains in training (aka her precocious daughters).

An Oregon native, she wilts without trees and doesn’t mind the rain. She is a fan of delicious flavor, a follower of the Light, and a believer in happily ever after.

Season’s of Soldark Cover Reveal

I know what you’re thinking. I promised to do more content that wasn’t a cover reveal. But this one and the next one are special. I was an early reader, so you get reviews too!

Actually, to say I was an early reader for season’s of Soldark is wrong. The book is technically already out. You can go to Amazon right now and get all four novellas in the series: https://amzn.to/3E5wiTA*

Season’s of Soldark is just the collected omnibus version for those who like their books all in one place.

Seasons of Soldark
Novella Collection
by Liz Delton
Publisher: Tourmaline & Quartz Publishing LLC

Book Blurb:

Ignite your destiny.

Welcome to the city of Soldark, where four women forge their own paths through the seasons in this novella collection.

Mae. A seamstress down on her luck, but chasing her destiny.
Verity. The clockmaker’s daughter, who gets in over her head after a theft.
Caz. The plucky journalist looking for her big break.
Aurelia. The ambitious inventor who’ll do anything for her family’s prosperity.

Join Mae, Verity, Caz, and Aurelia as you explore the four Seasons of Soldark novellas in one collection.

  • Spectacle of the Spring Queen
  • The Mechanical Masquerade
  • All Hallows Airship
  • The Clockwork Ice Dragon

No world-ending plots. Just character-driven, low stakes, low fantasy, with a dash of steampunk.

Even more info on the books:

Here’s are the blurbs for the 4 novellas inside this collection, along with my reviews:

Spectacle of the Spring Queen: Mae Wright has always dreamed of opening her own seamstress shop, and when she inherits a premises in the illustrious city of Soldark, she thinks her dreams have come true. But misfortune strikes the moment she steps foot in the city, when she loses her money and her things after saving her dog from falling into the port. With the help of a local theater and its mysterious director, she’ll need to get back on her feet–but will her dreams of becoming a seamstress be the same after finding a new life in the theater?

My Review:

This novella follows Mae as she sets out for an exciting new life in the big city, only to be met with bad luck at every turn.

I was really impressed with Mae’s positive attitude. Whenever something goes wrong she resolves to power through and work hard to improve her situation.

When it gets too tough, she finds help from an unlikely source. The theater is looking for a new costumer and she is a seamstress. How fortunate.

I loved the eclectic cast and the general theater atmosphere. The steampunk element shines in the mechanical engineering of the stage production.

This was an enjoyable and uplifting read that made me want to go see a live theater performance.

The Mechanical Masquerade: Verity Pennington has always wanted to attend the Midsummer Masquerade ball held by the elite society in Soldark. And when her best friend tells her she’s moving, and it’s their last chance to get in, Verity must tap into her creative side to pull off a mask that will allow her entrance. When a thief steals valuable clock plans from her father’s shop, and Verity knows he’s going to be at the ball, getting in isn’t just a fanciful idea anymore, but a daring escapade.

My Review:

How to describe this novella? It’s not quite a mystery, but also not exactly a heist, spy mission or even a romance. Without ruining the story all I can really say is that there was a theft and there is a plan to recover what was taken, but there will be twists along the way.

True to its summer theme, this story will make you wish you could go to a fair, and eat shaved Ice and funnel cakes. The Clockwork imagery is fantastical and the descriptions of the ball are gorgeous. The villain is truly nasty, and the heroine is brilliant. The Mechanical Masquerade is one you will want to attend.

All Hallows Airship: After a childhood illness, Caz Coppersdown is finally heading out of Soldark on her own, though she doesn’t consider her great aunt’s estate anything exciting. She’s more interested in tracking down a big news story that’ll get her published in the Soldark Times, but her aunt’s All Hallows soiree doesn’t seem too newsworthy. That is, until a catastrophic blast in town points fingers at innocent people. She’ll need to dig for facts quickly, because the constables are calling…

My Review:

I enjoyed this short Steampunk novella. It had a great Autum vibe with Halloween trappings without being creepy or overly scary.

All Hallows Airship has no supernatural elements. But it does have are a cute airship pilot and a mystery to solve.

This is the perfect story to get in the seasonal mood without worrying about nightmares.

The Clockwork Ice Dragon: Aurelia Sundon finally has a chance to get into the illustrious Inventor’s Guild. The only problem? The deadline for submitting her invention is Christmas Day. She thinks she’ll be able to swing it, until her ex-boyfriend shows her his competing invention, which has gone out of control and is covering the city in snow. As she decides whether to help him, the snow is getting deeper, and the clock is ticking..

My Review:

The Clockwork Ice Dragon is a delightful holiday tale of high hopes and determination. It’s also a light romance, about a guy just trying to impress a girl. He goes about it all wrong and a cautionary tale about how people do not know how to drive in snow.

I loved the fun steampunk aesthetic of this story. It would make a fun read for any time of the year but setting it at Christmas time added a certain context of wonder that made it special.

A Girl’s Guide to … Cover Reveals

Today I’m helping my friend RJ celebrate her Birthday by sharing the cover of her newest novella. I am excited for this book to come out it sounds interesting, and like all of RJ’s books I know it will have deep characters and leave an emotional impact on me.

Blurb:
Waking up in the hospital with a foreign brain transplant is every teenage girl’s nightmare come true.

In a near futuristic society, athletic and misanthropic Layne Slenndon had one life goal: make the US Olympic hockey team. But a freak ski accident means she needs a donor amygdala to survive. The new brain part belonged to a demure, introverted, music-loving bookworm. Suppressing its emotions and dominating its will should be easy. Right? Not when broody band lead, Fawkes Lucasson, enters the picture.

And what about all the crazy new ways she’s begun to see her childhood best guy friend, Finn?

Layne has to fight to control a heck of a ton of new emotions, or her high school life might just be over.

A Toe Tale

Hello everyone, I know it has been ages since I’ve blogged, and I guess it’s time to share what’s been happening. I don’t share very much about my personal life on here I prefer to keep it about books. So fair warning, it’s about to get real.

I am diabetic, so that’s a problem if anything happens to me, the situation can go from “this is not that bad,” to “this is really bad,” very quickly.

That is what happened last November I went hiking. I am no stranger to hiking but I am not a die hard can walk all day on rough terrain hiker. I am more of a go for an hour and stay on the, preferably paved, path kind of hiker. This was not that kind of hike, this was a long all day hike up and down steep changes in elevation. This not my kind of hike. I ended up with a blister on my big toe, both of them actually.

I got those blisters hiking to see this water fall:

Worth it? Maybe not when you here what happened next.

On normal people something like this might have cleared up in a matter of days. For me it was weeks and unfortunately that blister got infected with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The large right toe ended up getting amputated.

Trigger warning: the following picture is of my feet. I have socks on but if you think it will bother you — scroll quickly.

I hesitate to call myself an amputee because this hasn’t effected my life much. I often forget that the toe is missing until I take my shoes off.

The most surprising thing to learn was that phantom pains are real pains. It’s not like a phantom feeling or an itch. It is pain. Sometimes the big toe on my right foot will just cramp up for no reason and that’s a problem, because the right toe is the one that’s missing.

When there isn’t a phantom pain it’s just general uncomfortableness. When I have shoes on it feels like I’m wearing one size too small and my toes are all crammed together and can’t move. With the big toe gone they have more room than ever but because I can’t move the big toe my brain thinks I can’t move any of my toes. In an ironic twist this feeling is actually helped by stuffing a piece of pool noodle into my shoe to fill the gap.

Below is a picture of my very scientific template:

Bare feet is a little bit better in regards to cramped toe feeling, but without the big toe, the balance is off. I need to step carefully, or I feel like I do. You would think that sandals would be a good compromise but not really.

I will never be able to wear flipflops again and that saddens me greatly. I can’t wear flipflops because the big toe literally holds it on. But most sandals have a similar issue. I can attach the ankle strap to keep the sandal on my foot but most sandals have a strap that goes over the toes. Without the big toe to fill that spot the front half of my foot just slides back and forth as I walk.

Besides I do not want to answer the same questions twenty times a day as random strangers comment on my foot.

Though, I guess now I can just tell them to read about it on my blog.

It’s taken me a while to get back on my feet. Pun always intended. It was hard to focus on anything while I was recovering. Even reading was a chore and forget about writing anything. The few blog posts I managed to get out were because the author and/or publisher provided copy that I could copy and paste into the template and hit the schedule button.

Now after six months I am finally ready to get serious about this again. Expect a lot more reviews, reveals and writing updates in the coming months.

I’m even planning my first big post-op trip sans toe. I’m going to be at Realm Makers in St. Louis this July 13-15th. If you are also going to be there feel free to say hi, I will be the one NOT wearing sandals.

As a thank you for reading this very serious blog post I give you this humous meme I made using my sister’s dog.

Accidentally a Supervillain

Book 5 in the Supervillain Romance Project Series

Superpowers are a super pain.

The non-powered middle child of a superhero family, Abigail Park has always taken pride in being “the normal one.” No flying and throwing power blasts for her, thank you. Just a safe, steady office job, evenings in with her cat, and weekly hot yoga when she’s feeling adventurous. Genetics can be cruel.

When Abigail finds herself in the line of fire during a superhero and supervillain standoff, her latent abilities literally explode—blasting the HERO unconscious and catching the eye of sound-manipulating villain Thunderstruck. Threatening to send proof of her “aiding” him to the authorities, he blackmails her into helping him in his next big heist—against her own boss.

Abigail wants out, but as her antagonistic banter with Thunderstruck turns to something weirdly resembling flirting, the smirking villain hints that his intended target isn’t as innocent as Abigail believes him to be. Can Abigail get Thunderstruck to trust her with his secrets or is it all a cover for a more malevolent plan?

If Abigail can’t figure this out, she’s never going to hear the end of it at family dinners … if she even manages to make it out alive at all.

Author Bio Long

When a terrible tragedy occurs in his kingdom, that mysterious woman is his only hope of bringing justice to light. For the cage that imprisons him grows harsher every day, and he is losing the fight.

But there are thorns at sunrise.

Brought together on the barest thread of reality, Usilea and Petar must discover what really happened to the royal family. But Petar’s time is running out. Soon not even a Mender like Usilea will be able to save him.

My Review of Thorns at Sunrise:

Thorns at Sunrise is the second book in a series of unique fairytale retellings from author Janeen Ippolito.

While the first book Met by Midnight was a loose take on Cinderella, Thorns at Sunrise sets out to tackle Sleeping Beauty. If the Prince had been the sleeping one. Although the girl is now, the hero Thorns at Sunrise maintains a balance between both POVs and avoids the easy “girl power” narrative. Urlisa and Petar have a healthy relationship and the feels are there for those who came for the romance.

Like Met by Midnight, Thorns at Sunrise also includes original poetry, that compliments the prose.
The author is also a poet in her own right and I wondered which came first, the story or the poem?

If you live for fairytale retellings, this is one series you won’t want to miss. Met by Midnight and Thorns at Sunrise share characters, so I recommend reading them in order for maximum enjoyment.

I was blessed with an early review copy from the author, the above review is my fair and honest evaluation of the provided work.

In addition, special edition hardbacks of Met by Midnight and Thorns at Sunrise are also available.

The special edition hardbacks will feature all-new illustrated covers by Kristen Hildebrand/Magpie Designs.
