Plan the escape.

Rescue the slave.

What could possibly go wrong?

Mere’s continuing her apprenticeship in San Valencia, but when a strange illness affects everyone in the dragon colony including dragons, she’s forced to help a pregnant girl find safety.

Rescuing slaves is all in a day’s work for Jareem, until a new slaver in town takes exception to Jareem’s interference. Now, sick and with a wounded dragon, Jareem must free the slave and find Mere and the pregnant girl before the slaver.

The clock is ticking. The baby’s due any day, and the slaver’s persistent. Mere and Jareem must reach beyond who they believe themselves to be in order to bring the former slaves home in one piece.

Bio:

Even as a young girl, Kandi J Wyatt, had a knack for words. She loved to read them, even if it was on a shampoo bottle! By high school Kandi had learned to put words together on paper to create stories for those she loved. Nowadays, she writes for her kids, whether that’s her own five or the hundreds of students she’s been lucky to teach. When Kandi’s not spinning words to create stories, she’s using them to teach students about Spanish, life, and leadership.

Excerpt from Dragon’s Winter:

Karstan raised a white brow. “Surely you know, being a rider and all. For many winters now, Main Street’s sported cheaper wares because they don’t have to pay the workers. It’s all slave labor.”

Jareem didn’t know that. “I thought the slave trade was dwindling.”

“Think again, young man. They’ve gotten smarter.” Karstan tapped his bald forehead. “While you’ve managed to put a dent in the mining labor, they’ve figured out how to bring in other workers. No open slave markets like there used to be; instead they hold private auctions in respectable places. Why go to the expense of producing magicked ebony to fight dragons if you can just hide your operation? More recently, though, a wealthy merchant has been building an empire on women and children—not for the mines.” Karstan shook his head. “Worse yet.”

Jareem didn’t want to dwell on what that meant.

“Do you know a wealthy man with partial sideburns and a fancy mustache?” Jareem leaned on the counter, any thoughts of shopping forgotten.

Karstan wiped the counter top, focusing on a particular spot. “I wish I didn’t. That’d be Lorenzo Ortiz, merchant extraordinaire, or so he flaunts himself. His real merchandise is female slaves, or so I’ve been told by a reliable source. Came to San Valencia a winter or two ago. He runs a big business and is probably the wealthiest man in San Valencia. Where’d you see him?”

  “Slapping a young woman.”

A knowing look crossed the merchant’s face. “Ah, and you stepped in the middle of it and now you’re invested and want to free her. Good luck with that.”

“Are you saying it’s impossible?” Jareem frowned, remembering the honey-brown hair and gold-flecked green eyes of the pregnant girl.

“Impossible, no. Impractical and nigh unto improbable, yes.” Karstan rested his elbows on the counter he’d just wiped down. “Listen, if you decide to go up against him, know this: you’re taking on the whole lot of them. They’re collaborating now—common enemy will make friends of even villains, and you riders have given them that. They’ll come looking for you, and their revenge will be…” he grimaced. “Thorough.”

Iggy and Oz: book one review, and book two Cover Reveal.

Today I bring you a fun cover reveal for book two a super fun series.

The series is called Iggy and Oz. It’s about two brothers who have to deal with all kinds of weird things in their neighborhood, but of course the adults never see any of it.

The first book was called Iggy and Oz and the Plastic Dinos of Doom. I loved it and had a ton of fun while reading about the boys chasing these living plastic dinosaur toys all over their neighborhood. You can purchase it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WF8WR8Q/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0

As of this writing it’s only 99 cents for the ebook. It should be free on Monday August 3rd and 4th 2020.

If you still aren’t convinced to check out this book (for free) then here’s my actual Amazon review:

This book was an enjoyable read even as a single adult. While I’m sure kids will absolutely love the absurdity of plastic dinosaurs coming to life, adults will find plenty of references to childhood favorites to keep you entertained. Everything from Scooby Doo jokes to an Indian in the cupboard reference.

Iggy is a humorous narrator who’s parents seem to be raising him to be a first class geek. I love his references and his off topic asides.

This is the first book to a series that will feature strange cases in a small neighborhood. I will be very interested to see what happens next.

Are you ready to the see the cover and learn about book two?

What if you discovered soda pop that gave you superpowers with each sip?

Iggy Risner is back with another laugh out loud neighborhood adventure. However, this time the stakes are much higher. The discovery of a long-forgotten soda pop machine is about to turn the neighborhood on its end. Not only does the soda taste great- it gives every kid who drinks it: Superpowers.

Flying Orange, Walk through walls root beer and invisible grape. For Iggy, the chance to be the neighborhood hero is too tempting to pass up.

When a group of high school bullies gets their hands on the soda- Iggy joins forces with his arch-nemesis.

Will they keep the neighborhood from being ruled by a gang of high school tormentors? Or will they find themselves losing a battle that could cause every kid to live in terror?

Iggy & Oz: The Soda Pop Wars will make your child’s imagination soar and make the hair behind their necks stand on end as they read on. Full of twist and turns, this is perfect for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Last Kids on Earth.

Order your copy today and get in on the adventure. The pre-order price is only $1.99.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08F1R18SB/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i3

The book officially launches Tuesday October 27th.

I’m so excited, this book not only has another unique cover with a nostalgic feel, it just sounds super amazing.

UUP Dual Cover Reveal, Duel.

One of my favorite publishers Uncommon Universe Press is releasing two Cinderella retellings simultaneously. So what better way to celebrate this than to host a dual cover reveal and have them fight to see which is more interesting.

First up is Ashen by H.L. Burke.

Stealer of warmth, bringer of death. What if Cinderella had a secret that kept her locked away?

Unable to make her own body heat, foundling Lizbete survives in the tavern kitchen, drawing warmth from the fires, the sun—and sometimes, other living beings. Her days are spent cooking alongside the tavern owner and avoiding the suspicious gazes of the villagers in her small northern town. While she quietly longs for the handsome Brynar, she knows she has no chance with the mayor’s son, even if he invites her to the First Frost festival.

When sudden earthquakes strike Brumehome, blame falls upon Lizbete, and not even her friendship with Brynar can protect her. She finds shelter in the dangerous caverns of nearby Ash Mountain. There she discovers mysterious people with her same ability to draw heat—and a fiery doom in the mountain that slowly awakens with every quake.

Now the festival Lizbete thought to avoid is her only chance to warn the villagers. Yet even with Brynar at her side, can the strange girl dubbed the Ash Lizard hope to save the town that fears her?

A rugged YA Cinderella retelling set in a fantasy world with light steampunk elements.

Wow that sounds super interesting and not at all like Cinderella. But can the cover do it justice?

Very nice, I love how the cover is so cold until you get to the bottom and see that fire burning inside her. I think it perfectly embodies the description.

Now Met by Midnight, by Janeen Ippolito

An outcast prince. A captive healer. A single night that changes their destinies.

She lives a nightmare.

As a Mender, Renna is held captive to an endless cycle of receiving and recovering from the physical ailments of others—a cycle that led her mother to an early grave. When her father becomes deathly ill, Renna is desperate to save her only remaining family. Even if it means allying with criminals and taking an illegal mission into the royal palace on the night of their greatest ball.

He’s haunted by dreams.

Unable to be Mended, Prince Jaric’s existence is a curse to his family’s façade of health and security. Marrying him off at the ball and sending him to a distant dukedom is the royal solution—but Jaric has his own plans. For years he’s dreamed of a young woman, a strong-hearted Mender he would give everything for. When she arrives the night of his betrothal, he’s determined to discover her true identity.

Met by midnight, their fates are entwined.

While escape seems the only answer, powerful forces conspire to keep Renna and Jaric within their cages. Forces that undermine the foundations of the kingdom itself—and threaten any hope of a future together.

This YA romance features Cinderella in an original fantasy world with a dystopian twist.

I’m starting to think that, people who go to balls, is the only thing you need for a Cinderella retelling. But let’s check out the cover.

Very, very nice. This cover is very elegant and low key. I love the vines sprouting out of the title. I think it does a good job of making the reader want to open the book while still maintaining the mysteries promised in the blurb.

So what do you think?

Which cover is better?

Is people going to a ball the only thing you need for a Cinderella retelling?

Does that make Romeo and Juliet a Cinderella retelling?

Echo of the Fae: Cover Reveal

Welcome to June! You’ve survived everything this year has thrown at you. So far. *2020 laughs evilly.*

But I’m not here to worry you. I’m here to tell you about Echo of the Fae. A new fantasy adventure from author Jenelle Leanne Schmidt.

This is the first of the amazing summer releases that are coming out in 2020. Because a pandemic can’t keep good fiction down.

Today’s post is just a cover reveal but I will have a full review for you later in the month. Until then make sure you read to the end for a special excerpt.

Echo enjoys the peace and solitude of the Faeorn forest, regardless of how strange spending time in the “haunted” wood seems to others.

But on the cusp of her thirteenth birthday, the discovery of a family secret reveals why Echo has never been drawn to the sea like her mother. This discovery shakes the foundations of her world and sends Echo on a quest, not merely into the forest, but into the heart of the fae-lands themselves, to rescue the sister she didn’t know existed.

Elves, dragons, and fairy courts will put Echo’s wit and resolve to the test. But with time running out for her sister, will Echo even be able to save herself?

A fairytale adventure perfect for fans of The Secret of Roan Innish and The Girl Who Drank the Moon.

“Enthralled by the terror, charm, riddles, and beauty of a richly depicted fae world, I devoured this marvelous book in two sittings! Readers of all ages will love Echo, a heroine strong in her weakness, clever and resolute amid her doubt and fear. An Echo of the Fae is sure to satisfy lovers of adventure and faery!” — J.M. Stengl, author of The Faraway Castle Series

Author Bio:

Jenelle first fell in love with stories through her father’s voice reading books aloud each night. A relentless opener-of-doors in hopes of someday finding a passage to Narnia, it was only natural that she soon began making up fantastical realms of her own. Jenelle currently resides in the wintry tundra of Wisconsin—which she maintains is almost as good as Narnia—with her knight-in-shining armor and their four adorable hobbits. When she is not writing, she homeschools said hobbits and helps them along on their daily adventures… which she says makes her a wizard.

Excerpt:

Do the fae read books? Echo wondered suddenly, and voiced the question before she had time to consider whether or not it might be rude.

“We don’t read about life; we live,” Malilia replied. “And we learn, not from reading, but from living.”

“That’s beautiful,” Echo said. “And yet… hollow.”

Malilia arched an eyebrow. “Hollow? What is in your books that is so wonderful?”

“Everything!” Echo enthused, warming to the topic. “Why, in books you can be anyone, go anywhere. There’s a freedom to reading unlike anything else. When you read, it makes you think differently about the world and your own life, and sometimes it helps you understand what’s going on around you by showing you a different perspective. And… well… there’s beauty to be discovered in books, more real and more true because it’s only limited by your own imagination. And besides, it’s…. it’s just… fun!”

Malilia grew thoughtful. “This is something you care about.”

“Yes.” Echo felt a little embarrassed. She did not usually speak so forcefully. “I like reading.”

“I can tell.” Malilia’s eyes twinkled with amusement.

About the book

Cabernet would give almost anything to be remembered–except his freedom.

Cursed to be eternally forgotten, Cabernet grew up walking a dangerous, lonely line between the world of mankind and the world of fairy. Now known only by a faceless reputation as a rogue and fairy aficionado, he wanders ceaselessly with the cat Maugrim as company.

Then the king dares order him to eliminate a magical foe in northern waters, and threatens to attack fairy lands if Cabernet refuses. As an increased annoyance, he is saddled with a stiff naval officer, the king’s elderly personal advisor, and the advisor’s nurse, a charming young woman named Rosemary who can inexplicably remember him.

Cabernet wants to complete this mission quickly without actually facing the enemy, a dangerous enchantress who nearly killed him before. But sea perils and fearsome monsters blindside his every trick and turn. Moreover, he is somehow growing fiercely attached to the human tag-a-longs.

As the enchantress’s deadly net tightens around them, Cabernet must face the terrors of his past in order to save his new-found family–and future.

Enjoy this standalone YA fantasy that combines dark whimsy with fairy tale magic, plus a side of Oliver Twist and an enchanting romantic subplot.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

I never wanted to leave the Bronx, but a weird alien guy in a funny hat gave me a magic samurai armor and told me to save the world. Who could argue with that? I didn’t count on having to work with an eclectic bunch of misfits more likely to fight each other than an interdimensional dictator. But here I am. So when my old buddy shows up with a job—ok, a questionably legal job—and a way out of this freak show circus, well—I guess I’ll have to decide if the world really needs me after all.

THE COVER!!!!

RSD01RABB-CoverFinal

Cover Reveal Trifecta

I have some news. News important enough to drag me out of my sick bed.

Super author Michele Israel Harper is releasing three books this year, and she is revealing all the covers today!

First is the book I am most excited to read. Silence the Siren is the sequel to the most excellent book, Kill the Beast.

Silence the Siren

Cover-Reveal-StS-MIHHuntress Ro LeFèvre is offered a job to hunt down and kill a pest plaguing the Seven Seas. A siren has been sinking the king of Angleterre’s ships, and in turn, vast amounts of his wealth.

Fleeing heartbreak, Ro gladly accepts, but there’s just one problem. The king will credit the Marquis de la Valère, and no other women are allowed on the voyage.

Ro will just see about that.

Hiring an all-female crew without the king’s knowledge, Ro hopes they will follow her to the Caribbean, not take the gold and flee.

But when Ro is plunged deep into the ocean by the siren she’s being paid to kill, presented the sirens’ side of the story at knife point, and pressed to join them or die, Ro must decide whether to complete her mission, join the sirens, or something in between.

Before the sirens sink the ship full of men above.

This fast-paced, high-action adventure is a Little Mermaid reimagining and the second book in the Beast Hunter series.

Read my review of the first book Kill the Beast here.

The next book sounds super interesting. I love science fiction but this sounds like it has elements of fantasy too. The best of both worlds.

Queen of the Moon

Cover-Reveal-QotM-MIHZy has no memory of life before ruling her moon. And it doesn’t bother her in the slightest. Each day is the same: get yelled at by her mother—who is not happy to have been dragged along to the moon’s wasteland—stroll through her town to ensure everything is running smoothly, and then dance under the stars until the Silvers show up for their nightly battle.

And her people watch her fight for them night after night, hatred burning in their eyes.

Her people may snub her, may whisper of overthrowing her, but Zy couldn’t care less. She is queen, and she will be until the Silvers defeat her or she finds a way out of her bargain with the King of the Underworld.

Or so she thinks until a stranger breaches the barriers of her moon for the first time.

As the only one standing between her people and the annihilation of the human race, Zy isn’t about to let some attractive stranger end her rule—but a little flirting never hurt anyone. Anything to keep him from discovering her secret.

The last book sounds hilarious, and the cover is so beautiful.

Ghostly Vendetta

Cover-Reveal-GV-MIH“Dare to spend the night in mysterious Rutherford Hall! When? The 175th anniversary of the Rutherford family’s unsolved murder. Ghosts guaranteed. Cash prize: $5,000. Want more deets? Ask Tyler, Stewart, or James.”

I laughed aloud as I read the flyer. Yeah, right. To think that I, Candace Marshall, world’s biggest scaredy-cat, would go anywhere near some haunted house, much less spend the night in one. I crumpled the stupid thing, pitched it in the nearest trash can, and went on my merry, oblivious, and soon-to-be-scared-out-of-my-mind way.

* * *

Candace Marshall doesn’t do ghosts. Or zombies. Or vampires. Or mummies.

Anything scary, really.

When she finds herself signed up for a dare she’s gone out of her way to avoid, things spiral out of control. Quickly.

Stuck in a mansion alongside a vengeful spirit, a miffed boyfriend, and a room full of people she doesn’t know or even like (if she’s being completely honest here), she must decide whether to act brave or let the coward within show.

Or kill the person who got her involved in the first place.

Ghostly Vendetta is a prequel novella to Zombie Takeover: Book One of the Candace Marshall Chronicles.

Which of Michele’s up coming books are you most excited to read? Or which cover do you think looks the best?

Dust Cover Reveal

First off I’m sorry I skipped last week, I was sick, it happens. But I hope I can make up for it by dropping a sweet cover reveal for an exciting new release.

bookstagram-2

I’m excited to join in the cover reveal for Dust by Kara Swanson, releasing from Enclave publishing in July 2020! Dust is a Peter Pan retelling/sequel, and book one of the Heirs of Neverland duology.

Book description:

bookstagram-1

The truth about Neverland is far more dangerous than a fairy tale.

Claire Kenton believes the world is too dark for magic to be real—since her twin brother was stolen away as a child. Now Claire’s desperate search points to London… and a boy who shouldn’t exist.

Peter Pan is having a beastly time getting back to Neverland. Grounded in London and hunted by his own Lost Boys, Peter searches for the last hope of restoring his crumbling island: a lass with magic in her veins.

The girl who fears her own destiny is on a collision course with the boy who never wanted to grow up. The truth behind this fairy tale is about to unravel everything Claire thought she knew about Peter Pan—and herself.

About the Author:

As the daughter of missionaries, KARA SWANSON spent her childhood running barefoot through the lush jungles of Papua New Guinea. Able to relate with characters dropped into a unique new world, she quickly fell in love with the fantasy genre.

Swanson is the award-winning author of The Girl Who Could See and Peter Pan retelling/sequel Dust (Enclave Publishing, July 2020). She helps young writers explore their passions as a faculty member of the Young Writer’s Workshop and also offers her own author coaching services.

Kara is passionate about crafting stories of light shattering darkness, connecting with readers, and becoming best friends with a mermaid—though not necessarily in that order.

You can connect with Kara online where she chats about coffee, fairy tales and bookish things on InstagramFacebook, Twitter and at karaswanson.com.
