Hi, I am coming at you from St. Louis, Missouri at the Realm Makers writers’ conference. Today my friend Anna is revealing the cover for the Anthology she edited and helped publish. The title is a Spoonful of Malaysian Magic. If you’re curious why, then it would help to know that all the authors in the anthology, along with Anna herself, are from Malaysia. Collin Yeoh has wanted to be a writer all his life, and indeed has been writing professionally for 17 years. At some point, he remembered that advertising copy wasn’t what he wanted to write growing up as a lonely bookworm kid. He now finds writing things that have plots, characters, themes, genres, and that won’t be subject to notes like “please include more product benefits” a lot more fun. He lives in Kuala Lumpur.

Hamizah Adzmi is a storyteller and currently works as the Knowledge Mobilization Programme Officer for Musawah, an international women’s rights NGO. Today I’m helping my friend RJ celebrate her Birthday by sharing the cover of her newest novella. I am excited for this book to come out it sounds interesting, and like all of RJ’s books I know it will have deep characters and leave an emotional impact on me.

A Toe Tale

Hello everyone, I know it has been ages since I’ve blogged, and I guess it’s time to share what’s been happening. I don’t share very much about my personal life on here I prefer to keep it about books. So fair warning, it’s about to get real.

I am diabetic, so that’s a problem if anything happens to me, the situation can go from “this is not that bad,” to “this is really bad,” very quickly.

That is what happened last November I went hiking. I am no stranger to hiking but I am not a die hard can walk all day on rough terrain hiker. I am more of a go for an hour and stay on the, preferably paved, path kind of hiker. This was not that kind of hike, this was a long all day hike up and down steep changes in elevation. This not my kind of hike. I ended up with a blister on my big toe, both of them actually.

I got those blisters hiking to see this water fall:

Worth it? Maybe not when you here what happened next.

On normal people something like this might have cleared up in a matter of days. For me it was weeks and unfortunately that blister got infected with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The large right toe ended up getting amputated.

Trigger warning: the following picture is of my feet. I have socks on but if you think it will bother you — scroll quickly.

I hesitate to call myself an amputee because this hasn’t effected my life much. I often forget that the toe is missing until I take my shoes off.

The most surprising thing to learn was that phantom pains are real pains. It’s not like a phantom feeling or an itch. It is pain. Sometimes the big toe on my right foot will just cramp up for no reason and that’s a problem, because the right toe is the one that’s missing.

When there isn’t a phantom pain it’s just general uncomfortableness. When I have shoes on it feels like I’m wearing one size too small and my toes are all crammed together and can’t move. With the big toe gone they have more room than ever but because I can’t move the big toe my brain thinks I can’t move any of my toes. In an ironic twist this feeling is actually helped by stuffing a piece of pool noodle into my shoe to fill the gap.

Bare feet is a little bit better in regards to cramped toe feeling, but without the big toe, the balance is off. I need to step carefully, or I feel like I do. You would think that sandals would be a good compromise but not really.

I will never be able to wear flipflops again and that saddens me greatly. I can’t wear flipflops because the big toe literally holds it on. But most sandals have a similar issue. I can attach the ankle strap to keep the sandal on my foot but most sandals have a strap that goes over the toes. Without the big toe to fill that spot the front half of my foot just slides back and forth as I walk.

Besides I do not want to answer the same questions twenty times a day as random strangers comment on my foot.

Though, I guess now I can just tell them to read about it on my blog.

It’s taken me a while to get back on my feet. Pun always intended. It was hard to focus on anything while I was recovering. Even reading was a chore and forget about writing anything. The few blog posts I managed to get out were because the author and/or publisher provided copy that I could copy and paste into the template and hit the schedule button.

Now after six months I am finally ready to get serious about this again. Expect a lot more reviews, reveals and writing updates in the coming months.

I’m even planning my first big post-op trip sans toe. I’m going to be at Realm Makers in St. Louis this July 13-15th. If you are also going to be there feel free to say hi, I will be the one NOT wearing sandals.

My Review of Thorns at Sunrise:

Thorns at Sunrise is the second book in a series of unique fairytale retellings from author Janeen Ippolito.

While the first book Met by Midnight was a loose take on Cinderella, Thorns at Sunrise sets out to tackle Sleeping Beauty. If the Prince had been the sleeping one. Although the girl is now, the hero Thorns at Sunrise maintains a balance between both POVs and avoids the easy “girl power” narrative. Urlisa and Petar have a healthy relationship and the feels are there for those who came for the romance.

Like Met by Midnight, Thorns at Sunrise also includes original poetry, that compliments the prose.
The author is also a poet in her own right and I wondered which came first, the story or the poem?

If you live for fairytale retellings, this is one series you won’t want to miss. Met by Midnight and Thorns at Sunrise share characters, so I recommend reading them in order for maximum enjoyment.

So as you can probably guess the real title is NOT The Gift of Dragons 2. That was just me not wanting to give away the title in my title. Would you like to take a guess before I reveal it? The second book will have a four word title.

Cover Reveal: Prophetess of Arden

Today I’m helping reveal the cover for this new book but I have nothing for you just the cover. No description, no pre-order link, no Goodreads link. Why? Because this reveal was on Bookstagram but I am not on Instagram so I have to post here.

I can tell you that this book is the first book in an epic fantasy series called the King and Prophet Chronicles. I am reasonably sure it takes place in a kingdom called Arden. I can also tell you with certainty that there is also a prophetess in this book. I am even willing to bet that she is the main character.

I can also tell you that I am an early ARC reader for this novel and as soon as I finish it I will share a review here for you, right now I have one more book to read before I can get to it.

Prophetess of Arden is expected to release on or around March 24th.

So long time readers will remember how when I published my book Runaway Lyrics it was part of The Frosted Roses group promotion. Well, this year the Arista Band of FairyTale Re-tellers is back with six Snow Queen retelling in their Broken Mirrors collection. I do not have a book in this collection but one of my frosted sisters, Sarah Pennington, is back with a topsy-turvy Wonderland/Snow Queen mash up.

As a special treat, Sarah is sharing a fun fact about her book to whet your appetite. If you like Tea you’re definitely going to want to read this.

Fun Fact:

Given that one of the most famous scenes of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is, of course, the Mad Hatter’s tea party — and given my own tendency towards writing stories where food is a plot point — it should be no surprise that tea also plays a significant part in my take on Lewis Carroll’s classic. Alys’s first meeting with Kai Hatter is, as in the original, at a tea party, and they continue to bond over tea (and riddles) as they grow up together. Some would even say that it’s one of the foundations of their friendship.

So, if tea is so important . . . what kind of tea is it? And what are Alys and Kai’s favorite teas?

Alys and Kai share a preference for black tea over green, though they also enjoy herbal teas (or tisanes, as Kai would point out is the proper name). Both of their favorites are blends developed and perfected by Kai himself. Alys’s preference is for a summery blend of blueberry, cinnamon, and vanilla flavors mingled in black tea leaves — add just a touch of honey to make the perfect cup! Kai, for his part, is proud of all his tea blends and is happy to share any of them, but the one he loves most brings together delicate rose petals and almost flavor with chai spices. While it took the longest out of any of his teas to perfect, he thinks it was well worth all the effort!
