My Dive in Review:

One of my favorite things about Fantasy as a genre is jumping right into a new world without having to have any previous knowledge about it.

So when I saw that this was an anthology written by Malaysian authors I figured it would be fine since it’s fantasy.

I was right. Each story does a great job of painting a picture of its own unique world, as all good stories should. But every once in a while I couldn’t help but wonder if there was some subtext I was missing. Would I somehow get more out of this anthology if I was Malaysian?

I think the answer to that question is no. Even the few times I took to google to translate a phrase, or research a folktale, I never really learned more than I picked up from the context in the story. Another round of applause for these writers.

A Spoonful of Malaysian Magic is a wonderful dive into a culture that western audiences may be unfamiliar with but feels familiar because of its close proximity to both China and India. For that reason, my favorite story was one that showed modern day Malaysia rather than a more ancient setting. The Dalhia of Hutan Kilat, is a modern day urban fantasy story of a monster hunter who learns to love the magical creatures she is charged to destroy. It was sweet, and I enjoyed googling the creature names to learn more about them.

Whatever your tastes this anthology has something for everyone and definitively proves that fantasy is universal.

I received an Advanced reader copy of this book and the above review is my true and honest opinion.

A Spoonful of Malaysian Magic Cover Reveal

Hi, I am coming at you from St. Louis, Missouri at the Realm Makers writers’ conference. Today my friend Anna is revealing the cover for the Anthology she edited and helped publish. The title is a Spoonful of Malaysian Magic. If you’re curious why, then it would help to know that all the authors in the anthology, along with Anna herself, are from Malaysia. I think the title and the cover reflect that perfectly. See for yourself:

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Collin Yeoh has wanted to be a writer all his life, and indeed has been writing professionally for 17 years. At some point, he remembered that advertising copy wasn’t what he wanted to write growing up as a lonely bookworm kid. He now finds writing things that have plots, characters, themes, genres, and that won’t be subject to notes like “please include more product benefits” a lot more fun. He lives in Kuala Lumpur.

Hamizah Adzmi is a storyteller and currently works as the Knowledge Mobilization Programme Officer for Musawah, an international women’s rights NGO. She pursued a MA in Creative Writing under the Chevening scholarship in 2016/2017, where she focused on writing fiction revolving around Malaysian women. Previously, she was in the media industry and taught Creative Writing in universities. Her interests include books, writing, and feminism. https://www.twitter.com/omgthisbook

Ilnaz A. Faizal enjoys writing stories that cross between the genres of horror, fantasy, and romance. She also writes poetry and screenplays. Her favourite authors are Sarah Dessen and R.L Stine. When she’s not writing, she can either be found reading, embroidering cartoon characters, or sleeping. https://twitter.com/Ilnaz_Faizal

Ismim Putera (he/him) is a poet and writer from Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. His works can be found in online journals as well as anthologised in To Let the Light In Anthology of Life and Death, Instinct: Asian Speculative Poetry 2021, Colours of Tapestry 2: Stories from Asia, Unsaid: An Asian Anthology, and recently in The Big Book of Malaysian Horror. His poem “Durian Blossoms” won third place in the 7th Singapore Poetry Contest (2021) and “Jantina” was longlisted for the Malaysian Poetry Competition (2021). https://twitter.com/ismimputera

Joni Chng is a writer and photographer based in Malaysia, born and raised in Kedah. She draws a lot of inspiration from diverse cultures around the world, particularly from the Far East and Southeast Asia, with speculative elements of her own invention thrown in for good measure. Her work has appeared in several anthologies and magazines, including The Big Book of Malaysian Horror Stories (Fixi Novo, 2022), Night Terrors: Vol. 21 (Scare Street, 2022), Tainted Love: Women in Horror (Twisted Wing productions, 2021), and NANG 3: Fiction (2017).

Joshua Lim writes stories that reimagine the world around him. His fantasy short story “Generation Game Night” was shortlisted for the Malaysian Short Story Writing Competition 2022, and his other works have appeared in Fixi Novo’s anthologies KL Noir: Magic (2021) and The Big Book of Malaysian Horror Stories (2022). He is currently a medical student who finds time in between classes to write fiction and overthink his future.

A medical officer and quality manager by profession, Julia Alba has been writing fiction since she was a teenager. She loves a great story no matter the genre or the medium, whether it’s a book, a video game, an anime or a movie. Her bad habit is her inability to resist buying too much Harry Potter merchandise. She lives in Perak with her husband and daughter. https://twitter.com/joo_leeyah

Rowan C is 22 years old and currently studying accounting, which inspired the title of this work. They’re also heavily inspired by the D&D games they play, and they’ve always looked up to Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. They hope, through their work, these interests of theirs can be shared with all of you.

Sharmilla Ganesan is a radio presenter, writer, and culture critic based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She was with The Star newspaper for over a decade; currently, she is attached to BFM 89.9, where she hosts shows on current affairs, the arts, books, and film. She has also written for The Atlantic, South China Morning Post, NewNaratif, and ArtsEquator.

Stuart Danker is a Malaysian author who’s spent a decade writing across multiple genres and mediums, and that’s after plying his trade in various industries such as hairdressing and accounting. His first novel, Tinhead City, KL, debuted in 2021. Find him at www.stuartdanker.com.

Syazwani Jefferdin is currently a 24-year-old PhD in English student at Nottingham University Malaysia. She has been writing since she was 9 and has been writing fantasy fiction since high school. Currently, she’s working on her PhD creative work titled God’s Eyes, a novel that will explore the Fantasy genre with Malaysian elements embedded alongside classic western Fantasy elements.

Zufar Zeid lives in the morgue and tries to give a voice to the dead. In his free time, he pretends to write but is actually just daydreaming his life away.

Dive-in Review: Absolution

Hello welcome back. Today I am taking part in a blog tour for a new book called Absolution. My contribution is a review post. Absolution is the sequel to Amok that I featured here last year.

About Absolution

Release date: 24 November 2022

If cursed is the hand that kills, then it wouldn’t matter if that same hand stole, would it?

Tulen feels doubly cursed, forced to serve the bratty princess of Impian as punishment for her crimes. When said princess embarks on a pilgrimage, Tulen grabs her only chance to offer a sacrifice at the holy city of Suci—and maybe, finally, feel clean again.

Sultan Mikal has set his face towards Suci—and certain death. Nothing about his Penance is clear, except the fact that if he fails, Terang will fall along with him.

When Tulen’s pilgrimage intersects with Sultan Mikal’s quest to fulfil the Covenant of Salt, Tulen faces a difficult dilemma: What is her absolution worth in the face of the sultanate’s very existence?

Dive-in Review: Absolution

Absolution the book concludes Absolution the series, a trilogy of stories set in a fictional and fantastical version of southeast Asia. The stories and setting feel like they could be historical in some long forgotten part of our world.

Absolution follows Tulen, a young woman who has a special gift, which she uses in all the wrong ways. I really felt for Tulen. She is so relatable in her guilt. Tulen is sure she has committed an unforgivable crime, but the problem is, she’s the only one who believes she’s guilty. She dwells on it constantly always regretting her actions, never willing to forgive herself.

Since Absolution is a direct sequel to Amok, Mikal is back though not the POV character. He is on a mission to restore the covenant that was broken by his father. He is journeying in secret and it’s really fun knowing who he is while Tulen has no clue. I really like the way these two interact with each other. They are extremely shippable.

This book is the most spiritual of the three books in the Absolution series. Amok was mostly about having faith through adversity. The Tale of the Hostage Prince was about the importance of staying firm in your beliefs even when it might cost you everything. But Absolution takes it to the next level. It’s got so many themes, such as listening for the voice of God, forgiveness—even of oneself, and the most important lesson of all—leave the goat behind. (You’ll get it when you read it.)

the author gave me an ARC of this book for the purposes of review. My review here is my own honest opinion of the provided work

Amok Cover Reveal

Thanks to self publishing and the rise of the online marketplace, you can buy books written by authors from all over the world. Today’s book is written by an author who lives in Malaysia. I had the pleasure of beta reading this book and it was amazing. I’ll have a full review closer to the release date for you. But until then, rest assured that this cover is every bit as amazing as the story.

What is faith, except hope in desperation?

All Putera Mikal wants is to gain the Amok Strength, the supernatural power granted by Kudus to the Mahan royal family. No matter how religiously Mikal keeps his vows, Kudus still denies him the Strength—whilst his father, Sultan Simson, flaunts the Strength despite his blatant defiance of the Temple and the priests’ visions of coming doom.

Then the prophecies come true.

Taken captive, Mikal must find a way to liberate his people and restore his throne in Maha—and the key to this is the Amok Strength. But what does it take to gain Kudus’ favour?

Amok releases on June 24th, but until then you can preorder it at the following links:
