Her Fake Superhero Boyfriend, the fifth book in H.L. Burke’s Superhero Romance Project, superhero romcom series drops Sept 9th!

Her Fake Superhero Boyfriend is the fifth book in the Superhero Romance project series. It can be read as a stand alone but if you want to read the rest of the series it’s on sale until August 20th.

The series is book 1 FREE, books 2-4 99c each for the next few days.

I know your next question.

Did I read it?

Yes, yes I did.

Here’s what I thought:

Full review under the quote graphic.

Her Fake Superhero Boyfriend is the newest release in H.L. Burke’s superhero universe. It picks up after the events of Wishing on a supervillain and features a side character from that story.

This might be a story about a “fake” relationship but this story is really about two flawed protagonists who come into their own just by being genuine with each other. A truly relatable romcom that shows how confidence and self-worth are directly effected by the company we choose to keep.

KC is a face shifter who can be anyone. So why is it that after he meets Mira all he wants to be is himself.

Mira is a sweetheart from a cutthroat family and it takes KC to show her how truly strong she can be.

For all the tropes and Hallmark moments, this book is surprisingly deep.

For anyone who feels like they don’t belong, you just need to meet your people. Not necessarily a significant other, friends are enough.

*I was an early reader for this Novel. All opinions are my own and are given honestly*

Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic.

An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies, or television series (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek all took their turns), but she has grown to be what she considers a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.

Married to her high school crush who is now a US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.

She is the author of a four part fantasy/romance series entitled “The Dragon and the Scholar,” the Award Winning (2016 Realm Award for Young Adult Fiction) Nyssa Glass Steampunk series, and MG/Fantasy “Cora and the Nurse Dragon,” among others .

Release Day: Daisy Dunlap and the Cartoon Carnival!

Today is both, my favorite, and my most dreaded part of the writing process.

Publication day.

It’s done. The book is out of my hands. There is nothing else I can do to it.

Now I just have to wait for people to read it.

I have been working of Daisy Dunlap and the Cartoon Carnival for almost three years and now it’s finally ready to greet readers.

“So,” you ask, “what is this book about?”

The great thing about art is that it can be interpreted so many ways. Each person processes everything differently and comes to their own conclusions. And even us creators may subconsciously be planting messages that we didn’t intend. However, if you see this as a thinly disguised Bendy and the Ink Machine fan fiction, [stuffs unhealthy obsession with BATIM into the closet.] you’re reading too much into this.

The truth is, it’s more of a rebuttal to the Bendy franchise. If you know what that is, great. If not, the next paragraph is for you.

Bendy is a video game series that take place at an animation studio where the employees have been turned into horrific versions of the cartoon characters created there. It’s a story about greed and corruption. A legacy in ruins.

Daisy Dunlap is not like that. In my story, the characters are actually alive. They weren’t people first. They have their own souls. If anything inspired this book, it was the idea that an idea can take on a life beyond its creator. Just look at how far removed Mickey Mouse has become from the man, Walt Disney, who created and voiced him.

My novel is an exploration of legacy. As I’ve grown older, I’ve often wondered what I’ll leave behind. The obvious answer is my books. There is a reason that authors refer to their published works as their book babies. In the same way that Daisy’s mom in the story, left her daughter as a legacy, Daisy is kind of my legacy too.

Find the truth. Save the family legacy. Don’t get eaten by the giant cartoon spider.

Reeling from the loss of her mother, twelve-year-old Daisy comforts herself with the cartoons and carnival run by her family’s animation studio.

When an anonymous source accuses Grandpa of stealing his most famous character, the impish Tom Greenthumb, their family’s reputation, and business, are on the line. The only thing that can clear their name? A mysterious sketch book hidden somewhere within the Cartoon Carnival.

Sneaking into the theme park at night, Daisy uncovers her family’s greatest secret. Their cartoon creations are alive—and some of them are deadly.

Book one is Original Thoughts by my writing friend, Elisabeth Warner. Original Thoughts is the third book in her Internet shutdown series.

But when the Liberty party shuts down the Internet and arrests anyone with questionable social media activity, Lin moves back in with her parents to hide from the patrol officers. Hope is a far cry from her now.Until her ex-husband shows up.As a professional hacker, Don can delete Lin’s personal archive and wipe her slate clean, making her as good as dead. My Inspiration for “Letting Off Steam.”

My story “Letting Off Steam” is a very fan service filled story filled with cameos from established SVR characters. But did you know it actually ties into another novel in the universe? Power Through is book three in the Supervillain Rescue Project. (The one with Marco on the cover.) From this book, I borrowed the setting, the villian, and of course Marco.

The truth: I just really wanted to write a story with Marco in it.

The more interesting version of the story behind the story:

As soon as Heidi mentioned that she wanted to open up her superhero universe to other authors, I knew I wanted to be included. I have read all the SVR books and had a wish list of all the things I wanted to know more about or include in a story.

I knew I was going to use Marco and an early draft actually had the story almost entirely from Marco’s POV. But once I realized that Violet was the more important of the characters I slowly took away Marco’s POV to make room for hers. But the more I wrote Violet, a.k.a. Valve, the more I figured out who she was and the more this became her story.

For Violet’s backstory, I took a cue from Stephen King. I always thought that Carrie was not a horror story but a superhero origin story in which the person chooses the wrong path. Why does Carrie become the villain? Because she has no support system or safe place to go. Her home life is just as bad as her school life.

So Violet also needed to have nowhere to go. Her dad hates sables and school is only survivable by pretending to not exist. There’s also the whole girls attacking her in the locker room thing too.

Next I needed a villain, and I needed one that would have a good reason to visit the abandoned steampunk park without knowing that someone was already living there. Who better than the man who used to use it as a lair. I also included Seth Wallace’s sister who appears in Captured by a Supervillain book three in the Supervillain Romance Project series, because I wanted the satisfaction of the two villains named Wallace actually interacting with each other.

But the real reason I wrote this story is — I really wanted to use the abandoned steampunk park as a base for a vigilante steampunk superhero.

My favorite part of the story was fleshing out the Jules Verne theme park. I went through the original descriptions and tried to make sure nothing I added contradicted them while also not repeating anything. After fleshing it out I really want to go there.

I used to work at an amusement park when I was younger. I pulled a lot of the feeling of walking through an empty park from that experience. Amusement parks are so different when you’re alone. They’re suddenly too big and too quiet and you feel so small walking through them.

Today I have a cover reveal for you it’s from an author I’ve featured before. Lauren H. Salisbury has been on here before for her science fiction retellings of Moses and for her steampunk prodigal son retelling. This time she’s genre hopping again with a fantasy romance.

Behold the cover for: The Wolf King.

Unable either to release him or keep him prisoner without risking a full-scale war, she agrees to marry him instead, allowing his army access to her lands in exchange for the freedom to rule as she sees fit. But he ignores their bargain. His army strips Tyrrath’s resources, and her people go missing.

Cover Reveal: Daisy Dunlap and the Cartoon Carnival

Today’s post is a cover reveal for a very special book.

It’s mine!

I wrote another book and commissioned a unique cover for it. I am so happy with how it turned out that it was honestly hard for me to plan a cover reveal instead of just sharing it right away.

This time instead of a YA fairytale retelling it’s a middle grade mystery with a large helping of fantasy and a little cartoon magic.

Dunlap’s Cartoon Carnival is the theme park home to Tom Greenthumb. (Think, Tom Thumb meets Mickey Mouse.) But all is not as it seems, when the lights go out. The Cartoons are alive. Even the villain.

The cover design is by Yuin-Y. She’s a very talented artist from Malaysia and you can find her on Instagram as @elvenStar.

About the book:

So what is the story behind this book?

I like Cartoons. I also love vintage vibes and these characters just kind of grew from that. There was also a certain indie horror game that absorbed a lot of my attention. I’ll let you guess which one. But beyond the cartoon references and in jokes, this is a book about family. Real family, found family and connecting with family.

My Review

Author H.L. Burke has done it again. That’s right, even more superhero books. Game on is the first book in a new series featuring the next generation of heros, AKA the children of the characters from her previous series.

Usually, I like to tell people were to start reading but there are too many books in this universe and Game On has a shiny #1 on the cover so I guess well go with that. Besides, nearly every previous character makes a cameo so I can’t even go by who is in the book. Still there is an inate joy in seeing character grow and change over time.

On that note, I really loved getting to know the new cast of characters, especially Oliver. He was introduced in Burke’s most recent release Wishing on a Supervillain and it was interesting getting to see him all grown up.

Game On is a different kind of superhero book though. Instead of a villain to fight or a world to save, This is a sports book. Camp Sable’s Team needs to win the game and defeat the rival team to win the first ever Sable competition. I don’t normally read sports stories, but as always, everything is better with superpowers.

Dive in Review: Always Peachy

My Friend Amy released a new. It’s a Christian living book about finding happiness even when the universe feels like it’s out to get you.

Dive In Review: Always Peachy

Always Peachy: Living Happy When Life Hurts by Amy C. Williams, is an encouraging reminder that God is always there, even on those days when nothing goes right.

Amy provides entertaining and personal stories of times when life got hard but with God she could always get through it. I found so many of her personal anecdotes relatable.

The best part of this book is the message. You might look at this book’s title and assume the message is to always be happy no matter what, because God is a magical cure-all that will make the world go your way.

But he isn’t a magic cure-all. In Always Peachy: Living Happy When Life Hurts, author Amy C. Williams gives you permission to NOT be okay. She expresses, on every page of this book, how important all your emotions are.

A book that doesn’t make me feel less Christian for feeling sad, angry, or hurt, I am here for it. I am also here for the stories about buried washing machines and horse-riding in Guatemala.

*I received this book from the publisher and was not required to leave a review. The honest opinion is my own.*

Epic SVR News: A Kickstarter

Long time readers of this blog should know that I am obsessed with H.L. Burkes Superhero universe. It’s expanded well beyond the first five novels into MCU levels of content. And now it’s expanding again.

DOSA Files superhero anthology: 10 talented authors, 10 thrilling stories, ENDLESS ways to save the day.

That’s right, an anthology. Late last year H.L. Burke put out a call for submissions to see if anyone wanted to write stories in her expansive universe. Because she wants to actually pay the authors for their stories. H.L. Burke is running a Kickstarter to cover expenses.

DOSA Files cover art

10 Authors, 10 Stories, Endless Ways to Save the Day!

The Award-Winning Supervillain Rehabilitation Project series expands with this new ten-story anthology of exciting superhero (and villain!) tales.

Not only did I write a story for it—it was accepted!

I am excited to introduce you to Violet Rivelt AKA Valve. My story even borrows a setting from one of the main books. In the novel Power Through, the final fight takes place at a Jules Verne themed amusement park. I loved that park and wanted to know more about it. So I when Heidi gave me permission to expand on it, I strapped on my goggles and wound my gears. And because I am a huge SVR fangirl, you can expect lots of cameos from my favorite characters.

Letting Off Steam by C.O. Bonham
When teenage Violet’s powers manifest unexpectedly in a school locker room, she’s convinced DOSA will have pegged her as a villain.
Fleeing to an abandoned, steampunk-themed amusement park, she struggles to get a handle on her powers and discover her true identity.
The sudden appearance of actual supervillains throws a wrench in the gears.
Rewards Fit For Heroes—or Villains.

With the knowledge that I wrote a story in this anthology it might sound self-serving to ask you to back this Kickstarter, but as has been established I am a fangirl for this universe and you know I would be asking you to back it anyway, even if my story had been rejected. And there are some epic backer rewards.

Yes, there’s the standard ebook and paperback tiers, but there’s also a tier that gets you a TTRPG session DM’d by H.L, Burke herself. As someone who plays D&D with Heidi, I can assure you, this is a premium gaming experience.

If you can’t afford to back right now, that’s okay too. You can still help by sharing the Kickstarter. The campaign is only about a hundred dollars away from being fully funded at the time of this writing. Then we can start the stretch goals. Goal #1 is an audiobook production of the anthology. I am rooting for this goal because I love audiobooks and I’ve never had something I wrote in audio before.
