Flight of the Raven
(The Ravenwood Saga #2)
By Morgan L. Busse
Christian Fantasy
Paperback & ebook, 352 Pages
April 30th 2019 by Bethany House Publishers

Selene Ravenwood, once the heir to House Ravenwood, is now an exile. On the run and free of her family’s destiny, Selene hopes to find the real reason her family was given the gift of dreamwalking. But first she must adapt to her new life as wife to Lord Damien Maris, the man she was originally assigned to kill.

While adjusting to her marriage and her home in the north, her power over dreams begins to grow. As the strongest dreamwalker to exist in ages, her expanding power attracts not only nightmares but the attention of the Dark Lady herself.

With a war looming on the horizon and a wicked being after her gift, Selene is faced with a choice: embrace the Dark Lady’s offer, or search out the one who gave her the gift of dreamwalking. One path offers power, the other offers freedom. But time is running out, and soon her choice will be made for her.

My Dive in Review:

Flight of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse is an amazing story about a woman’s search for meaning.

At the end of Mark of the Raven we leave Selene in a hurried escape from her home, leaving behind her family and everything she knows to begin an unplanned marriage to Lord Damien. This sequel is everything I hoped it would be. It was emotional and thought provoking. It explores the desire we all have to know why we are here and what we are meant to do.

I am not a romance reader but I found myself deeply invested in whether Selene and Damien would make the most of their marriage. This is one of the few books that delves into relationships right. It realistically shows how hard they can be, because you are never really sure what the other person is thinking.

But the true stand out character of this book was Selene’s sister Amara. She struck me as unnecessarily antagonistic towards her older sister who was never anything but loving. In this book Amara takes on the responsibilities of being heir to house Ravenwood. She realizes the struggle her sister had to deal with but takes it on in order to protect her younger sister. I found the circular nature of her character arc satisfying and ultimately redemptive for the character. I went from hating her to wishing she had a bigger part in the book, though her part is still really important.

The ending was both sorrowful and hopeful. I am looking forward to the next installment of this saga.

Mark of the Raven: Dive in review.

Hello, I’m posting a dive in review today for Mark of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse. Mostly because this Friday I’ll be posting a review  for book two, Flight of the Raven, as part of the blog tour. I thought you might want to hear about the first book first so you can either read it in a three days or avoid spoilers for this book by not coming back to hear about book two.

Mark of the RavenLady Selene is the heir to the Great House of Ravenwood and the secret family gift of dreamwalking. As a dreamwalker, she can enter a person’s dreams and manipulate their greatest fears or desires. For the last hundred years, the Ravenwood women have used their gift of dreaming for hire to gather information or to assassinate.

As she discovers her family’s dark secret, Selene is torn between upholding her family’s legacy–a legacy that supports her people–or seeking the true reason behind her family’s gift.

Her dilemma comes to a head when she is tasked with assassinating the one man who can bring peace to the nations, but who will also bring about the downfall of her own house.

One path holds glory and power, and will solidify her position as Lady of Ravenwood. The other path holds shame and execution. Which will she choose? And is she willing to pay the price for the path chosen?

Mark of the Raven: Dive in Review.

Mark of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse, is a gripping fantasy tale, with detailed characters and deep world building.

The main setting of Castle Rook has a very Gothic feel to it, even though the setting is meant to be medieval I think. It has secret passages and grand halls, and hidden secrets. It’s as though the entire building is shrouded in shadows and haunted by mystery, completely consumed by the hate leeched off of its past inhabitants.

The world building is astounding, seven great houses rule seven nation states. To help the seven houses each was given a gift. Water, Fire, Wisdom , healing, light , Courage, and Dreams. (I still think courage stands out as not being very useful, but they have dragons so that makes up for it.) I have a soft spot in my heart for story worlds featuring hereditary elemental gifts.

I can not say enough good things about this book. I loved the build up as Selene learned to use her gifts and the mystery as more of the inter house politics came to light. But most of all I loved the Characters.

The third Person POV characters are Lady Selene from House Ravenwood (the dreamers), and Lord Damien from House Maris (the water benders). The former is a conflicted young woman who has just learned that she comes from a family of assassins. The later is a young man who, because of great tragedy, has found himself as the leader and protector of an entire nation. They are both well written characters who are both flawed, but yet seek to do the right thing.

The thing I loved most was the romantic aspect. Selene and Damien are not a love at first site couple. In fact they seem convinced that they could never feel anything for the other because heirs do not marry other heirs. It’s a slow build up, more curiosity than anything. They are so different from each other.

Another thing I loved was the way religion was handled. In this world there are two forces. The Light and The Dark Lady. The light is more powerful than the dark and the light shines brightly inside the souls of it’s followers. The Dark Lady seeks only her own power.

It is Selene’s doubt’s about the Dark Lady and her curiosity about the light that shines in a young man’s soul that truly sets this book apart.

This is book one of a saga, so be forewarned that l you will be left wanting more, but rest easy knowing there will be more to come.

The Heart of the cover reveal

A book that I have been anticipating for some time finally has a proper cover. So of course I jumped at the chance to show it off to the world.

The Heart of the Curiosity by H. L. Burke is a new Uncommon Universe Press Title.

The secret lies with the Heart.

cover reveal graphicBorn with a magical knack for manipulating emotions, Leodora’s only dream is to ensure her talented little sister dances on the biggest, brightest stage in the Republic: The Curiosity, a grand old theater of tradition and innovation. After escaping a cruel carnival, Leo secures her sister a place in the Curiosity’s chorus line, and herself a job as a professional audience member, swaying the crowd’s mood with her magic. The girls have a home for the first time in their lives.

Then a tragic accident darkens the theater. A greedy businessman begins blackmailing Leo, and financial woes threaten to close the show forever. The Curiosity’s sole hope lies in a mythical power source hidden beneath the maze-like passages and trapdoors of the theater—the Heart. And Leo’s only friend Paxton, nephew of the theater’s stagemistress, is the key to finding it.

While Leo and Paxton hunt for the Heart, the blackmailer’s threats loom larger. Mysterious figures, cryptic clues, and deadly traps hinder the search at every turn. If the friends cannot recover the Heart in time, Leo and her sister will be cast out of the only home they’ve ever known, and the final curtain will fall on The Curiosity.

Enter a world reminiscent of The Greatest Showman, with a puzzle worthy of Sherlock Holmes and National Treasure, in this new Steampunk Fantasy from H. L. Burke.

Cover reveal: Wish You Weren’t Here

iwwc_ji[final2]You may remember a book I featured on the Blog awhile ago, If Wishes Curses.

If you read that book and liked it this is the cover reveal for the sequel. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, it’s free today on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M743SN8/

Now, about book two:

I was done with my Jinn ex-boyfriend—but now I’m the only one who can save his life.

I’m already in enough trouble with my magic going crazy right when I’m opening a cover reveal graphicstorefront for romantic crimes consulting. The last thing I need is interference from Kiran Singh, who failed spectacularly as a boyfriend, and now wants me back with some crappy excuse of helping him track down illegal, dangerous love potions.

Then one of his other exes tries to kill me in a fit of jealous, doped-up rage—and ends up dead herself, with all evidence pointing to Kiran.

My vegetarian vampire mate, Cendric, is convinced Kiran is up to something. But homicide isn’t Kiran’s style, even if he’s starting to show serious psycho-jealousy of his own. Someone else is pulling the strings, and they don’t care how many people die from fake love.

If we can’t track down the real mastermind, my ex is going to disappear.
And not in the way I’d wish.

The Electrical Menagerie: New Cover and Audio book.

Last year I read a really great book it’s called The Electrical Menagerie. I thought the cover was as awesome as the inside. Here’s a picture of my signed paperback alongside my goodreads review of the book.

***

img_20190311_111014

Isn’t it cool? So old timey and steampunk.

The Electrical Menagerie by Mollie E. Reeder is the first book in a new Steampunk Fantasy series.

It recounts the struggles of Carthage and Huxley, two entertainers on their last dime and failing to pull in the crowds. Until the Celestial Palace announces auditions are being held to search for an act suitable and fantastic enough for the Princess’s upcoming birthday. These two grab on to what seems like their last hope and bet everything on winning.

I loved this book I was instantly drawn in by the characters, they are so likable and engaging. Watching Carthage and Huxley interact with each other is hilarious; their personalities are both contrary and, strangely, compatible. The robotic butler however, steals the show with his comedic timing.

The World of the celestial isles is unique, but not as hard to grasp as one might think. Surprisingly there is very little world-building dumped on the reader. It all flows smoothly with the story action. You will never notice that there is anything unlike the familiar world nor will you feel like you received a crash course in geo-metric-physics. (yes I know that is not a thing.)

Also, The Electrical Menagerie has the unique distinction of being the only book I have started in electronic format and finished in Paperback.

Well some people must not have liked that old cover as much as I did because the author decided to have a new cover made.

An Expected Escapade Excerpt:

Although Daisy had encountered the unicorn the night before, the sight still stunned her. Ginger’s ears flicked forward, and then the right one twitched back toward her rider.

“It’s okay, girl.” She wasn’t sure if she was reassuring herself or her horse.

“Hey there,” Ana called softly. “Where’d you come from? We won’t hurt you.”

Before Daisy could say anything, Ana slid off Root’s back. She let the lead rope fall to the ground and held her hand out.

“My name’s Ana, and this is Root. I think you already know her. She seems to know you.” Root blew air threw her nostrils. “See? I knew it. My friend over there’s Daisy, and she’s riding Ginger. Will you come meet us?”

To Daisy’s utter surprise, the unicorn complied. Step by wary step, it drew nearer. The shadows played along the pearlescent, twisted horn—the one feature that distinguished it from an ordinary horse. The unicorn paused just shy of Ana’s outstretched hand.

“You’re beautiful.” Ana’s voice was hushed with awe. “How’d you get here? I’ve never seen a unicorn before, and I don’t know anyone who ever has.”

The white head shook, flinging its mane out like an ocean wave breaking against a rock. Ana didn’t flinch. Instead, she kept up her litany of soft, soothing words. When Daisy realized the unicorn wasn’t going to hurt them, she slipped her leg over Ginger’s rump and dropped quietly to the forest floor. The fir needles muted her footsteps as she made her way over to Ana. By the time she reached her friend, Ana had one hand resting on the unicorn’s nose.

Artificial Love: a cover reveal

Boy howdy have I got a yarn for you! Today I’m talking about Artificial Love by author R. J. Conte. I’m going to show you a cover and tell you a bit about the book.

cover reveal graphicDeep in the heart of the wild west, rebel marauders are drawing out a bloody civil war that no side can win. Many ranchers, including Lisbeth’s father die trying to save their farms, leaving their women to fight to keep their land and stay alive.

When Lisbeth and her mousy younger sister Ruth come face to face with the uncouth land pirates who seize their farm as a scouting base, they only have one plan to protect their virtue: pretend to be commonplace, advanced domestic robots. Suppressing their fears, enslaved to the ruffians, the two young women are determined to convince the men they’re not human.

Their plan hits a snag when they meet Dane: a gorgeous prisoner-of-war who has a secret belief that robots can become sentient and develop emotions on their own… and he’s determined to use Lisbeth as proof.

Can the sisters keep up their ruse and survive?

Whispers-Blog-Tour

It’s time for another blog tour. This time it’s for author C.W. Briar’s debut novel. Whispers from the Depth.

About the book:

Whispers from the Depths Cover.jpgJoyful and blessed are Voice-bearers, for the Heavens have set them apart.

As Whisperers gifted with the Voice, Betka and her people are enslaved. Only they can control the dangerous spirits that haunt the waters, but they are forced to serve under cruel taskmasters. Betka has little hope of freedom from her service or her own bitterness.

They toil for the goodness of others.

A powerful water spirit terrorizes the castle where Betka’s sister is serving. Betka is assigned to the crew sailing to face the foe, and she fears for the only family she has left.

Rage is found nowhere in them.

In the beleaguered, flooded castle, a new threat awaits—a magic more powerful and horrifying than anything they have ever seen. Loyalties will be tested, and enemies will become desperate allies.

Betka is their only hope of escape—if she can subdue the wrath that endangers them all.

She who wields the waters for revenge drowns herself tenfold.

Be Our Guest Post with C.W. Briar:

Thanks for having me. Can I start off by saying how surreal it is to be doing my first blog tour? It’s like arriving at the Academy Awards, except my ritzy gift bag looks more like a paper plate with Oreos from my own cupboard.

They’re delicious, by the way.

For those who don’t know me: Hello. I’m C.W. Briar, I write books, and I have cute dogs. That’s all the important bits about me. Those of you who already know me (sorry) have probably gleaned two other facts: I like creepy stories, and I joke around online. That might seem contradictory, but it’s because serious me is long-winded, and writing a dark fantasy novel lets me be super long-winded.

In addition to suspense, action, and humor, Whispers From The Depths is an exploration of questions I’d been contemplating. We’re all familiar with the phrase “love conquers all,” but how, exactly, does it conquer? How does love win against a foe that’s content with being violent and cruel? What does it look like to interrupt the downward spiral of grudges and vengeance?

As much as anything, it’s the immersion into those questions that pushes Whispers into dark fantasy territory. I threw the two main characters, Betka and Asi, to the wolves. They have immense power as Whisperers with water magic, but none to protect themselves. The limitation to their ability is that it can’t be used to harm others. The Whisperers are desperate for an escape or way to fight back against a kingdom that has turned against them.

Betka’s life is a nightmare, and that’s before she gets news that her sister’s village has been attacked by a dangerous spirit.

That was the heartbeat of the story, the lifeblood flowing through every chapter. The old Whisperer dictates about love feel oppressive in that situation. Betka wrestles with them, just as I wrestled with them. The great thing about fiction is that we can let characters explore difficult questions while we have fun as readers.

And the book is meant to be fun, not just moral ruminations. Readers will have form their own opinions, but I think the spirit Ylvalas creates an interesting conflict. In this world, spirits inhabit the waters and can manifest in various forms. I took rather morbid delight in creating ways for water to be used as a weapon, then pitting the characters against those threats.

That’s the situation Betka finds herself in, trapped between a murderous spirit and cruel oppressors, fighting to rescue herself and her sister. It’s Betka’s story, and I loved her honesty and resolve through it all. I loved the strength of Asi’s tender heart and the courage in Kuros’s humor. Now I get to find out if readers also love the characters and their diverse responses to the horrors.

Author Nancy Holzner wrote one of the novel’s blurbs. She said it “entertains on every page and leaves the reader thinking long after the last word.” Honestly, that’s everything I hoped for from the book.
