Seaspoken Book Blitz!

Hey I’m back again. I might actually get the hang of this posting regularly thing.

Today I am part of a book blitz. It’s like a blog tour but instead of being really organized and spread out, a bunch of book influencers just blast about the book all over the internet. This whole week is a blitz for Seaspoken by Sarah Delena White.

If the name Sarah Delena White sounds familiar, it’s because I’ve featured her on the blog before for her Star-fae trilogy. You can read an interview with her here.

I am crunched for time and feeling lazy so this is the post copy as provided. No affiliate links this time. Scroll all the way down for an excerpt and a giveaway.

An ocean consumed by rage. A challenge that demands blood. A love that defies everything.

Battle-hardened warrior Evya Atathari longs for a truce between her sea-dwelling tribe and the elven invaders. But her mother, the powerful and vengeful Seamother, will stop at nothing to see the elves destroyed.

Then the Seamother enacts a brutal rite of challenge for Evya’s hand to gain a powerful ally in the war. But even as the greatest warriors of the sea vie for her favor, her heart is captured by a man who should be her mortal enemy.

Keliveth Dalzana is a failed prophet of the elven king’s court—until a vision leads him to Evya and a chance at ending the war. Drawn to Keliveth’s idealism, Evya agrees to help him win the deadly contest for her hand and establish a peace treaty through their marriage. Together, they dare to dream of a better future.

But when their own peoples turn against them, Keliveth and Evya must find the courage to embrace their true destinies—and decide how great a price they can pay for their love.

EXCERPT:

“Do you really believe we’re doomed to fight each other?”

“Yes.” A tear trickles down my cheek as I force the word out. Anything to keep him from taking one more step into the angry sea.

The singer’s laugh rolls through the mist. “I don’t believe that. Our peoples used to be friends. Tell me from your heart—do you believe the One Who Is has destined us only for war?”

The waves dance higher as his voice passes over them, and I shudder. The ocean is listening.

The Seamother is listening.

Depths take him, he’s going to get both of us killed if he doesn’t stop talking. I slip into the water, shifting back into my sea-dwelling form as I do. With a few flicks of my lithe tail, I speed through the shallows until I reach another large rock, this one only a few yards from the singer. I crouch behind it and speak in a whisper. “Please, leave before the Seamother hears you!”

“My name is Keliveth. Keliveth Dalzana.”

The singer’s simple words send ice through my veins. A Dalzana. A prophet of the elves, too powerful and dangerous to trust. And yet … this makes his claims about the Creator plausible. My head spins as I try to sort out what I dare believe about this man, and I say the first thing that comes to mind.

“I didn’t want to know that.” I would rather have gone on thinking of him as the dream-singer. As someone who didn’t have to be my enemy.

“Why not?” His voice is so earnest, so sincere, that it makes my next words all the more bitter.

“Because someday soon I will meet you on the battlefield.” My voice quavers. “And when that happens, either you’ll die with my spear through your chest, or I’ll be turned to ash by your magic.” I pause, gulping back sudden tears. “It’s worse when you know the names of the ones you kill.”

“Well, then, I guess you shouldn’t kill me.” I can almost hear a smile in his voice, and I clench my fists. Does he think I’m joking?

“I’m leaving,” I snap. “Don’t follow. My people will spear you and shred you to pieces.” I push away from the rock, ready to swim back down to the palace and leave this absurd dream world behind.

His voice cuts through the darkness again.

“Tell me your name. Then I won’t be able to kill you either.”

A pang shoots through my heart. If only it were that simple.

A wave swells before me, rising so much higher than the rest of the breakers that the stone outcroppings that dot the shallows are buried. I grip the rock I hide behind as the water rushes over my head. All thoughts are chased away by the sight of the wave as it arcs above me and crests in glittering white foam.

The Seamother has found me.

Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche Blog Tour.

I am so excited to be a part of the blog tour for Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche. The Enola Holmes books were some of my favorites and I am beyond excited to help promote the newest installment.

This book is the seventh in the series and I had to wait so long for it. It’s been over ten years. Was it worth the wait? Keep reading for not only my review but also an excerpt from the upcoming book.

“A young girl who is empowered, capable, and smart…the Enola Holmes book series convey an impactful message that you can do anything if you set your mind to it, and it does so in an exciting and adventurous way.”–Millie Bobby Brown

Enola Holmes is back! Nancy Springer’s nationally bestselling series and breakout Netflix sensation returns to beguile readers young and old in Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche.

Enola Holmes is the much younger sister of her more famous brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft. But she has all the wits, skills, and sleuthing inclinations of them both. At fifteen, she’s an independent young woman–after all, her name spelled backwards reads ‘alone’–and living on her own in London. When a young professional woman, Miss Letitia Glover, shows up on Sherlock’s doorstep, desperate to learn more about the fate of her twin sister, it is Enola who steps up. It seems her sister, the former Felicity Glover, married the Earl of Dunhench and per a curt note from the Earl, has died. But Letitia Glover is convinced this isn’t the truth, that she’d know–she’d feel–if her twin had died.

The Earl’s note is suspiciously vague and the death certificate is even more dubious, signed it seems by a John H. Watson, M.D. (who denies any knowledge of such). The only way forward is for Enola to go undercover–or so Enola decides at the vehement objection of her brother. And she soon finds out that this is not the first of the Earl’s wives to die suddenly and vaguely–and that the secret to the fate of the missing Felicity is tied to a mysterious black barouche that arrived at the Earl’s home in the middle of the night. To uncover the secrets held tightly within the Earl’s hall, Enola is going to require help–from Sherlock, from the twin sister of the missing woman, and from an old friend, the young Viscount Tewkesbury, Marquess of Basilwether!

Enola Holmes returns in her first adventure since the hit Netflix movie brought her back on the national bestseller lists, introducing a new generation to this beloved character and series.

My Review:

*Thank you to Net Galley and Wednesday books for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. My opinions are my own and are provided willingly and honestly.*

Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche is the long awaited seventh novel in the Enola Holmes mystery series.

If you are a long time fan of this series then you will be most excited to know that this is truly book seven and not a Netflix tie in. The Movie was fine, but the books are better.

If you are just coming to the books, because you loved the Netflix movie, that’s fine, just be warned that this book has spoilers for the first six books in the series, which do have an over arching plotline. If you don’t care about spoilers the prologue to this novel includes a short summery of each of the previous Enola books. After a ten year break I admit I appreciated this refresher.

The Black Barouche is honestly the book in the series I most wanted while reading these books as a teenager. I was, and still am a big Sherlock Holmes fan, and this book finally sees Enola and Sherlock working on a case together. Well maybe not together. They are basically competing to see who solves it first. Seeing as they are sister and brother, this is the only natural outcome.

I just can’t get over how great this book was, Springer’s writing style is exactly the same and took me right back to when I binged the original six books in one month. Enola’s voice was just as confident and snarky as before. There is also the added bonus of revisiting Tewky from book one, and who Netflix viewers will recognize from the movie.

Each Enola Holmes book was centered around some aspect of Victorian society that related to women and most importantly to the injustices they faced at that time. The Black Barouche is no different, though this book may have the darkest injustice of all. It deals with the reality of how truly disposable women were.

A Nobleman writes his wife’s sister that she is dead. No explanation, no funeral, no body. Just, your sister is dead so sorry, don’t come round anymore. It’s up to Sherlock and Enola to discover what became of the late Lady Dunhench.

As is often the case in Victorian mysteries the true criminal is the law. The law that lets men, well men with money and power, do whatever they please without consequence.

Excerpt:

“Is she fainted?”

Indignant, I wanted to sit up and say I was not so easily killed and I never fainted, but to my surprise my body would not obey me. I merely stirred and murmured.

“She’s moving.”

I saw the clodhopper boots of common men surrounding me and smelled alcohol on the breath of those leaning over me.

“Let’s get ’er inside.”

“Somebody go fer the doctor.”

Strong hands, not ungentle, seized me by the feet and shoulders. I could have kicked and yelled—I felt strong enough now—but my mind had started to function, realizing that I was about to be carried into a pub, for only in a public house, or pub, would workmen be drinking in the daytime. And normally no woman of good repute would enter a pub, or if she did, she would be jeered at until she retreated. But, my avid brain realized, fate in the form of Jezebel had given me opportunity to spend some time inside a pub—no, in the pub, most likely the only pub in Threefinches! So I closed my eyes and pretended to be rather more helpless than I was as the men hauled me inside and laid me down on a high-backed bench by the hearth.

Someone brought something pungent in lieu of smelling salts, but I shook my head, pushed the malodourous hand away, opened my eyes, and sat up, acting as if it were a great effort for me to do so. A burly, bearded man in an apron, undoubtedly the publican who kept the place, came running with a pillow for my back, and I thanked him with a gracious smile.

“Will ye have a nip of brandy, lydy?”

“No, thank you. Water, please.”

“Jack! Water for the lydy!” he bellowed to some underling, and he remained nearby as I managed, with hands that genuinely trembled, to remove my gloves. Their thin kidskin leather was ruined by the mauling it had taken from Jezebel’s reins, and my hands were red and sore; doubtless they would bruise. Grateful for the cool glass, I held it in both hands and sipped, looking around me. Half of the denizens of the place, like the owner, stood in a semicircle staring at me not unpleasantly, while the rest did the same from seats at the rustic tables—all but one. A tall man with beard stubble on his chin and quite a shock of coarse brownish-grey hair hiding his forehead had withdrawn to a table by the wall, where he devoted his attention to his mug of ale, or stout, or whatever noxious brew he might fancy. I said brightly to the tavern-keeper, “I believe I would like to stand up.”

“Now, why not wait for the doctor, lydy—”

But taking hold of his arm, as he stood within my reach, I got to my feet with reasonable steadiness. There were muted cheers from the onlookers. Nodding and simpering at the men all around me, I lilted, “Thank you so much. Do you suppose anyone could go out and fetch my bag, and my hat and parasol? I believe they fell along the—”

Already half a dozen would-be heroes were stampeding towards the door. Yet, if I had walked in here under my own power, any request for help would have been met with deepest suspicion. Such is life: odd.

Reminders:

The release date is August 31st.

You can read book seven even if you haven’t read the first six books but it will spoil those books for you.

Excerpt from Dragon’s Winter:

Karstan raised a white brow. “Surely you know, being a rider and all. For many winters now, Main Street’s sported cheaper wares because they don’t have to pay the workers. It’s all slave labor.”

Jareem didn’t know that. “I thought the slave trade was dwindling.”

“Think again, young man. They’ve gotten smarter.” Karstan tapped his bald forehead. “While you’ve managed to put a dent in the mining labor, they’ve figured out how to bring in other workers. No open slave markets like there used to be; instead they hold private auctions in respectable places. Why go to the expense of producing magicked ebony to fight dragons if you can just hide your operation? More recently, though, a wealthy merchant has been building an empire on women and children—not for the mines.” Karstan shook his head. “Worse yet.”

Jareem didn’t want to dwell on what that meant.

“Do you know a wealthy man with partial sideburns and a fancy mustache?” Jareem leaned on the counter, any thoughts of shopping forgotten.

Karstan wiped the counter top, focusing on a particular spot. “I wish I didn’t. That’d be Lorenzo Ortiz, merchant extraordinaire, or so he flaunts himself. His real merchandise is female slaves, or so I’ve been told by a reliable source. Came to San Valencia a winter or two ago. He runs a big business and is probably the wealthiest man in San Valencia. Where’d you see him?”

  “Slapping a young woman.”

A knowing look crossed the merchant’s face. “Ah, and you stepped in the middle of it and now you’re invested and want to free her. Good luck with that.”

“Are you saying it’s impossible?” Jareem frowned, remembering the honey-brown hair and gold-flecked green eyes of the pregnant girl.

“Impossible, no. Impractical and nigh unto improbable, yes.” Karstan rested his elbows on the counter he’d just wiped down. “Listen, if you decide to go up against him, know this: you’re taking on the whole lot of them. They’re collaborating now—common enemy will make friends of even villains, and you riders have given them that. They’ll come looking for you, and their revenge will be…” he grimaced. “Thorough.”

An Unexpected Exploit Excerpt:

Franklin felt a calloused hand on his forehead and started to turn toward its owner, but the pain in his neck stopped him short. “Hush, don’t try to move. Let me check the compress.” Sahasi adjusted some kind of damp fabric, and as she did, Franklin caught a glimpse of coarse black hair covering her hand.

He felt his pulse quicken. What had he gotten himself into? What kind of people were these?

“Will he be okay?” Ladaku’s tone carried not a hint of the concern in his words.

The weight of Sahasi’s hand lifted, and Franklin tried to move again. He needed to see where he was; besides, the position he lay in and the tickling of his nose from the fabric beneath him was getting too uncomfortable.

“Ladaku, use your size and help me reposition him.”

Whatever the relationship between the two, Franklin knew the tone of a mother when he heard one. Soon large, hairy hands wrapped around his arms and pulled him to a sitting position. Franklin learned nothing at first, as he was too busy trying to keep his breakfast down. But when the nausea and pounding in his head subsided, Franklin cracked his eyes open a slit.

A large, dark face with a flat nose and beady black eyes met his gaze. Long, stringy hair covered the creature as far as Franklin could see. His eyes came back to the face. Although it was alien, it still bore the recognizable expressions of tenderness and concern.

“My name is Sahasi,” she said. “I am a healer among my people, the sanraksaka. I don’t believe you have properly been introduced to Ladaku.”

Franklin shifted his position and shuddered. Staring at him with hairy arms crossed in front of an ape-like chest was the same creature that had met his gaze across the clearing.
