The Luck Child a dive in review.

A few weeks ago I participated in a cover reveal for a new book from Uncommon Universes Press the release date for that book is tomorrow so I am back to give you my honest review. Usually I would start with the official back cover copy but I notice I tend to summerize the story in my reviews, so I’m going to put all that stuff the review and as the name implies — dive right in.

Dive in review of The Luck Child:

The Luck Child, by Rebekah Shafer, is a new take on the fairy child story.

In this world you can be born Fairy or you can be born Human. Poor Orphaned Cabernet (Pronounced: Cab-er-nay it’s french I think,) seems to have been born both. He is drawn to the fairy kind, he gets along with the fairies and they seem to like him. But he’s obviously human. He can’t do magic without tools, and he craves human company. The only problem is that human beings don’t remember who he is once he leaves their sight. You can’t call yourself lonely until you’ve been forgotten by even the most casual of acquaintances.

The narrative bounces back and forth between the present (where Cabernet is asked to find his majesties missing ships) and the past (where a young boy searches for a family, or at least some companions who won’t forget him).

I found myself equally captivated both by the predicament of adult Cabernet and the heart breaking loneliness of young Cabernet. I feel like each portion could have been expanded into two separate stories but once I reached the climax I really appreciated the way it all came back around and made a circular plot. Each half needs the other to make a whole story.

The world building and fairy lore were great, but I was most blown away by the character development. I felt such empathy for Cabernet that I actually felt lonely while reading. (Of course I do my best reading alone so that may have been a contributing factor.) In addition to Cabernet there is a whole cast of fairy creatures as well as a handful of humans, each well developed in their own right and all of them like real people. (mostly because people are awful and would totally forget about a poor boy looking for shelter and food and company.)

Maybe the best thing you can take away from this novel is that everyone should have a Cat. Cat’s will never forget you.

I found a copy of this manuscript in the bottom of an old email, it bore a note from the publisher saying that it was an advanced reader copy. I have taken it upon myself to read this manuscript and report to you my own honest opinion of it’s contents. So that if you should happen upon your own copy of this manuscript you will be informed and shall not fear it.

About the author:

Rebekah Shafer is a thirty-something-year-old living in Georgia, USA, who got tired of spending an awful lot of time and energy trying to Be an Adult the Right Way.

Now she writes stories in a small house painted green on the inside, with plenty of jazz vinyl albums, a problematic front lawn, and two grey cats who look just enough alike to confuse house guests.

From the back of the book:

Cabernet would give almost anything to be remembered–except his freedom.

Cursed to be eternally forgotten, Cabernet grew up walking a dangerous, lonely line between the world of mankind and the world of fairy. Now known only by a faceless reputation as a rogue and fairy aficionado, he wanders ceaselessly with the cat Maugrim as company.

Then the king dares order him to eliminate a magical foe in northern waters, and threatens to attack fairy lands if Cabernet refuses. As an increased annoyance, he is saddled with a stiff naval officer, the king’s elderly personal advisor, and the advisor’s nurse, a charming young woman named Rosemary who can inexplicably remember him.

Cabernet wants to complete this mission quickly without actually facing the enemy, a dangerous enchantress who nearly killed him before. But sea perils and fearsome monsters blindside his every trick and turn. Moreover, he is somehow growing fiercely attached to the human tag-a-longs.

As the enchantress’s deadly net tightens around them, Cabernet must face the terrors of his past in order to save his new-found family–and future.

Enjoy this standalone YA fantasy that combines dark whimsy with fairy tale magic, plus a side of Oliver Twist and an enchanting romantic subplot.

Echo of the Fae: Cover Reveal

Welcome to June! You’ve survived everything this year has thrown at you. So far. *2020 laughs evilly.*

But I’m not here to worry you. I’m here to tell you about Echo of the Fae. A new fantasy adventure from author Jenelle Leanne Schmidt.

This is the first of the amazing summer releases that are coming out in 2020. Because a pandemic can’t keep good fiction down.

Today’s post is just a cover reveal but I will have a full review for you later in the month. Until then make sure you read to the end for a special excerpt.

Echo enjoys the peace and solitude of the Faeorn forest, regardless of how strange spending time in the “haunted” wood seems to others.

But on the cusp of her thirteenth birthday, the discovery of a family secret reveals why Echo has never been drawn to the sea like her mother. This discovery shakes the foundations of her world and sends Echo on a quest, not merely into the forest, but into the heart of the fae-lands themselves, to rescue the sister she didn’t know existed.

Elves, dragons, and fairy courts will put Echo’s wit and resolve to the test. But with time running out for her sister, will Echo even be able to save herself?

A fairytale adventure perfect for fans of The Secret of Roan Innish and The Girl Who Drank the Moon.

“Enthralled by the terror, charm, riddles, and beauty of a richly depicted fae world, I devoured this marvelous book in two sittings! Readers of all ages will love Echo, a heroine strong in her weakness, clever and resolute amid her doubt and fear. An Echo of the Fae is sure to satisfy lovers of adventure and faery!” — J.M. Stengl, author of The Faraway Castle Series

Author Bio:

Jenelle first fell in love with stories through her father’s voice reading books aloud each night. A relentless opener-of-doors in hopes of someday finding a passage to Narnia, it was only natural that she soon began making up fantastical realms of her own. Jenelle currently resides in the wintry tundra of Wisconsin—which she maintains is almost as good as Narnia—with her knight-in-shining armor and their four adorable hobbits. When she is not writing, she homeschools said hobbits and helps them along on their daily adventures… which she says makes her a wizard.

Excerpt:

Do the fae read books? Echo wondered suddenly, and voiced the question before she had time to consider whether or not it might be rude.

“We don’t read about life; we live,” Malilia replied. “And we learn, not from reading, but from living.”

“That’s beautiful,” Echo said. “And yet… hollow.”

Malilia arched an eyebrow. “Hollow? What is in your books that is so wonderful?”

“Everything!” Echo enthused, warming to the topic. “Why, in books you can be anyone, go anywhere. There’s a freedom to reading unlike anything else. When you read, it makes you think differently about the world and your own life, and sometimes it helps you understand what’s going on around you by showing you a different perspective. And… well… there’s beauty to be discovered in books, more real and more true because it’s only limited by your own imagination. And besides, it’s…. it’s just… fun!”

Malilia grew thoughtful. “This is something you care about.”

“Yes.” Echo felt a little embarrassed. She did not usually speak so forcefully. “I like reading.”

“I can tell.” Malilia’s eyes twinkled with amusement.

Rapunzel Tour: Diamond

Blog Tour Banner

Hey there, thanks for coming back for my second round on the Rapunzel tour. If you missed my first post, a dive in review of Misfortune click here to check it out.

Today I’m giving you my dive in review of Diamond book #3 in the Once Upon a Twist series.

Diamond

This time, Rapunzel’s not the one stuck in the tower, but the secrets he brings with him may cost her own life.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 85Once Upon a Twist #3
Diamond leads a quiet life with the woman she calls Mother. There isn’t much to pass the time save for excursions in the forest and one-sided conversations with her pet rabbit, Hobie. Men are cruel beings who care only for themselves and must be avoided at any cost. After all, Diamond’s own father gambled her away once. What other terrible fates might await her if people knew she existed?

Seth Stendahl is an alchemist with a middling proficiency in the Rohesian tongue. After growing up with and surviving six sisters, there shouldn’t be anything too difficult for him to master – except maybe breaking his leg and being locked in the top of a ruined watchtower.

This is Rapunzel with a twist like you’ve never seen it before.

Diamond Review:

Not all Diamonds glitter.

This Diamond is a girl. Her mother keeps her hidden away, always obsessing about her nearly eighteen feet of golden hair.

Before you start thinking you’ve seen this Disney movie before, you need to know that this is a non-magical story. Everything it totally plausible, well except for the alchemist, he’s still not magic though, just very fashion forward with the goggles and the foreign accent.

I loved the main characters who are super cute together. Seth, with his six older sisters knows how to say just the right thing. And poor Diamond, who has never spoken to another soul in her life let alone a man, has no idea what to say.

I also loved the gender swapping element of Seth being the one stuck in the tower, even though Diamond still had the long hair. It was an interesting twist that added originality to the story.

mock-00173

Okay so yes there are nods to everyone’s favorite Disney movie too. The jokes about the horse not acting very horse like were a particular favorite of mine. But Diamond shines (Pun Always Intended) on it’s own as a unique fairy-tale retelling that is sure to remind you why you love Disney movies in the first place.

*I was slipped an electronic copy of this story, secretly in the dead of night, for purposes unknown. I willingly relate to you now my honest opinion of the material so that you may be informed and forewarned about the contents.*

Dive in review: Misfortune

This was such a good twist on the Rapunzel story.

What if Rapunzel had been locked up to protect others from herself? It’s a question that rings close to home for us in this time of quarantine.

But it’s not a pandemic they are trying to prevent.

The princess has been raised to believe that she is full of ill luck, a daughter of blood and misfortune. Forbidden from even cutting her hair for fear the misfortune will escape from her. She has no idea of her own worth. Until a prince comes along and takes her from her tower.

mock-00164

An ancient Rapunzel with a biblical twist.

I love the message of this story, that everyone is worthy of love and grace. That we are not guilty for the sins of others. That there is a way out of the tower.

I loved the biblical elements that were included. The story takes place in an ancient times setting, and the apocryphal story of Daniel (yes the lion den guy) and the dragon (the story isn’t actually in the Bible. It’s basically a legend.) plays a large role.

And the tower. Rapunzel’s Tower. It’s the Tower of Babel! Sorry, I don’t know if that was a spoiler. Maybe file it under things to look forward to,

*I was given a copy of this story by the author for the purpose of review. The opinions expressed are my own and were reached honestly.*

Fictastic Interview with Akira

Today I have the honor of interviewing Akira Yamamoto.
Akira is a vegetarian vampire, with a Japanese name and a French accent. He’s also a fictional character. He can be found in the novel Wish You Weren’t Here, and the novella My Alien Engagment.

Fictastic Interview with Akira:

CO: Akira, you were first introduced in a Steel City Genie novel and now you are appearing in an Accidental Alien Romance Novella. How do you feel about this series hopping? Do you like meeting new people or would you rather be a regular in only one series? If Janeen tries to drop you into the Ironfire Legacy would you be okay with that?
AY: Oui, I’m all right with the series hopping. It keeps life interesting. I enjoy meeting all sorts of people, so I enjoy the new adventures. I do not have much desire to visit a different world, but if I must, I would prefer Cendric or Theiya going with me.
CO: Who would you want to play you in a movie?
AY: I like the author’s choices of Godfrey Gao or Shen Lim. Although I think Shen Lim fits what I look like now far more.
CO:  You are a Vegetarian Vampire, but you are also a world class chief. Do you feel that your cravings for blood have harmed your taste for real food?
AY: In actuality, human blood makes me…what is the word? Nauseous. It was a trouble until I discovered plant blood. Once I began ingesting plant-based blood, my life became far more active. Unlike the vast majority of Blood Kind vampires, I have few troubles with food. But I enjoy making dishes for specific diets and palates. It is a blessing.
CO: In My Alien Engagement we learned that you were seeing a certain light Elf law enforcer. How long has this been going on and how serious is your relationship? Will we be reading My Vampire Engagement next?
AY: Ouille! This, I cannot speak about too much… *he glances around furtively* I will say, it is complicated. And…she is not the reason we are merely exploring possibilities. I am.
CO: So at this point you’ve been a vampire for longer than you were human. But I’ve got to know, what were you like as a mere mortal?
AY: I don’t remember ever being a human.
CO: How do you cope with being immortal? Does it get boring after a century?
AY:Non, being immortal is very natural to me. I have never had the troubles that others have had with the transition.

CO: Did your friendship with Cendric change after he got married? Does having Allis around enhance your life or do you find that she is hogging your friend.
AY: Well, friendships must always change and shift over the course of life. Cendric and I have experienced many such shifts over the decades. I have no trouble with Allis. She is endearing and does good work in stirring up Cendric. He can become set in his ways at times. Such a shame. As well, there is no trouble with Cendric and I finding time to spend together–she does not take over all of his hours. I have enough of my own social life to entertain me. If anything, I sometimes wonder if Allis and Cendric need to spend more time together. They both tend to be more outward-focused in helping so many others.
CO: Are you holding out hope for an Akira spin off series? What kind of adventures do you think you would have on your own?
AY: A spin-off series would be lonely, I think. I prefer to be a part of a group.
CO:Thank you very much for coming Akira, I really enojyed getting to hear a little more about you.
Check out Akira in the following book:

MyAlienEngagement

She’s engaged. She’s transformed. She’s ready for anything.
Except her future in-laws…

Kelley Vanders-Froggett’s life is finally in order again: she’s on break from a great job, she has a supportive family, and she has Anthony Salamandras, her hot alien fiancé who’s making it all too hard to wait for the altar. Yeah, she’s still figuring out his culture, but everything is finally falling into place for their life together on Earth.

Then Anthony’s brother shows up declaring Kelley unworthy to marry into his family—unless she passes ancient trials. Never mind that these trials haven’t been used in generations. Either Kelley proves herself worthy, or she’ll be separated from Anthony forever.

Three trials, no warnings, and everything on the line. But Kelley’s already survived one fiery test, and she’s not going home without her man, no matter what it takes.

My Alien Engagement is the second novelette in The Accidental Alien Romance Chronicles, a series of short romantic satires featuring a sassy heroine, a hot alpha with a side of derp, a sweet core, and a fiery happily-ever-after.

Supervillain Rehabilitation Project

first in a series may first

If you have been following this blog for any length of time then you probably know I love books by author H.L. Burke. She mostly writes snarky fantasy with a touch of romance. But her newest book is new territory. Reformed is the first book in her new superhero series, The Supervillain Rehabilitation Project. If you are like me then you are already obsessed with all the marvel movies. This book so far is very much like a marvel movie Quick one liners, compelling characters, and a mysterious villain who you want to hate but kind of relate to them anyway. (but then I relate to most villians.)

89737680_555043062036553_519326056495185920_n

Once a villain, always a villain?

Optimistic and idealistic superhero Prism is determined to redeem her father’s legacy by rebooting his super villain rehabilitation program. To do so, she sets her sights on Fade, the relapsed super villain who was the reason the government canceled the original program in the first place. However, when she petitions for Fade to be released into her custody, she finds out things might not be as simple as she thought.

Prism

Convicted of an unforgivable crime, Fade received a choice: surrender to trial and possible execution or endure a memory erasure so he could start fresh. Now with no recollection of his time before incarceration, Fade doubts he has the ability to be anything but the villain the public believe him to be.

Fade

A series of attacks by a mysterious power-swapping villain points back to Fade’s past and the crime that cost him his freedom and memory. With her father’s legacy and her own reputation on the line, even Prism has to wonder: can a villain truly be reformed?

The ebook is currently on preorder for only 99 cents. Hurry because the price goes up May 1st.

Illusionary Review Tour

Today I am coming to you with a review of a Book I have talked about quite a bit.

(Yes I’m feeling better, and no it was not coronavirus.)

Illusionary by Desiree Williams has been featured on the blog a couple times, once when I interviewed the author and again when I previewed her new cover for the book.

Today I am going to post a review so that you all know how much I loved this book and why you should all read it.

From the back cover:

screenshot_20191117-173510 Dorothy got sucked into a tornado.

Alice fell down a hole.

Wendy flew to Neverland.

Kamryn? She tripped down the stairs.

Now, Kamryn Kensington finds herself in a strange new world. Within minutes of her arrival, she dodges an archer’s arrow and avoids getting sliced up by a cosplay reject holding a dagger to her throat. And that’s before the storyteller’s breath brings stories to life.

Home is the mission—to return to her family and pursue her life’s dream of art and travel. Yet the longer she’s in the Land of Ur, the harder it is not to feel for the people she meets. Even her artistic side can’t help but breathe in the beautiful wonder and magic of this new world. So when the Oracle hands her a different quest, she takes it on the condition he sends her home afterward.

No one thought to warn her of a jealous queen and her dragon minions. Or that, by helping her, the cute storyteller would go crazy. Or that her heart would rip in two when she left. Those would’ve been great facts to know ahead of time.

Considering that nothing in Ur is what it seems, the mission proves to be more than she ever imagined. But more than her own future will be in jeopardy if Kamryn doesn’t succeed.

Dive in review of Illusionary:

First of all this story is a book worms dream. So many references! There is no one book that this riffs but rather it is an ode to all the classics of childhood. Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland all get their nod.

screenshot_20191117-173642Kamryn Kensington is a wonderfully relate-able heroine. She may be an adult in years but like many she still struggles with ‘adulting.’ Her passion’s and dreams are taking her in a different direction than her older sister would have her go. Unfortunately, when the two siblings butt heads it’s Kam’s head that takes the hit. Right at the bottom of the stairs. When she wakes up in the land of Ur she has some questions. What she gets is a mission from a very shifty Oracle, but few answers.

Together she and Reese, an all powerful storyteller, set out to rescue the Maker of Ur so hopefully he can send her home. No yellow brick roads here though, this journey takes them all over the map, and deep into places inside themselves that they both would rather avoid.

Reese is amazing, he’s like Peter Pan, but he’s actually responsible. I really liked that his version of the lost boys, could look up to him and count on him to take care of them. Seriously, this guy is a girl’s dream come true, dashing, magical, responsible, and good with kids. He has it all, including a super secret past that he doesn’t talk about and Kam suspects he might not even remember.

Gah! I just want to tell you about the ending but I would never forgive myself if I ruined this book for even one person. Please just go read it already.

I loved the adventure and snark but most of all I loved the message. Adulting is not the same as maturing, and growing up is just an illusion.

FANtastic Interview about a Diverse Universe

I hope you are ready for the annual, “Hey it’s winter, have every holiday smashed together,” week. I am just ready for it to be over. Honestly I look forward to having my hours slashed. I need more time to read. So that I can keep up my weekly goal of bringing you more awesome things to read.

speaking of awesome things to read: I really recommend the Diverse series. It’s great for fans of Star Trek. The second book releases the 26th of December. Just in time to use your amazon gift cards. In honor of this release I’m interviewing Sharon Rose about a special twist that makes her series really stand out in the science fiction world.

But first a little about the book.

DiverseDemands coverDiverse Demands

 by Sharon Rose

She could use forbidden telepathy to prevent an alien war. But will her own people call her a hero or a criminal?

Kena, a lone human among aliens, forged a truce with her enemies by promising a controversial telepathic link with their future leader. They claim this is the foundation of lasting peace. But what are these obscure problems they now hide? Why is TarKeen, her strongest supporter, suddenly missing? Will their future leader be executed before Kena can reach her?

When another human joins Kena’s crew, he creates as many problems for her as he solves. Dissension sparks among her allies. Despite his interference, Antony does have a form of wisdom—unwelcome, though it is. Now, her decision is that much harder.

If Kena succeeds in fulfilling her risky promise, will anything be left of her career? And what about her and Antony?

Diverse Demands, the sequel to Diverse Similarity, is packed with adventure, intrigue, and rich alien cultures. The story explores just how far a person will go to solve the unsolvable. If you like classic science fiction merged with a Christian worldview, this book is for you.

Diverse Demands – book two will release Dec 26, 2019.

Did that description sound like your standard sci-fi plot? So what is this twist that set’s this book apart? Well it’s no secret that I feature a lot of novels by Christian authors on my blog. Well Sharon has done something astounding with this book she doesn’t just have Christian characters. She set her novels after the return of Christ! And she did it so subtly that I read the first book and had no idea.

(For those who need context: The Christian Bible ends with the book of Revelations that foretells a time of trials and hardship. It ends with Jesus Christ returning to Earth to rule for a millennium. This series takes place during that time span.)

To me the idea of having space travel and first contact after what we would think of as the end of human history is so mind blowing. Because it isn’t really an end. It’s the true beginning. As you can imagine I just had to ask the author about it.

FANtastic Interview with Sharon Rose:

CO: Why set a sci-fi novel after the return of Christ?

SR: Two entwined reasons:

If God created other races, then it follows that we would eventually meet them. I doubt that God would allow that contact while humankind is still in deception and turmoil. But after Christ returns and Satan can no longer deceive, the field changes dramatically.  Plenty of room for “What if…?”

I’ve always wondered about those who survive the trauma of the 7-year tribulation. Like us, they will have a lifetime of choices. Will they all agree? Humans? Not! I think life will be much better than today, but not without challenge.  And that drives a story.

CO: Was this twist part of the series from the beginning or did you decide one day to add it?

SR: Always intended. I once experimented with removing this aspect. It didn’t jive with Kena’s character. She is who she is because she has always known her God’s deep love for her.  (By the way, that same knowledge is possible for all of us, right now.)

CO: Can you tell me what hints there are in the first book to this post-Revelation future?

SR: In chapter 18, one of the Grfdn skews Human history to insult Kena, and she sets him straight. Kena is relating  historic events to a non-human, so she doesn’t use our prophetic terminology.

CO: Why don’t your aliens know about God or worship a creator?

SR: A creator is mentioned in book one, and Kena wonders about their apparent lack of interest. She actually has limited knowledge of what they believe. I speculate that every alien race is different. What they know or care about could vary. Timing, need, willingness, purpose…many issues could play into this. Kena didn’t find an answer in book one. Book two… I’ll just say that desperation and purpose crop up.

CO: Were there any resources that were especially helpful in writing about the end times and the millennial kingdom?

SR: I have found very little about survivors of the tribulation or their descendants. From the Bible, I know they exist, they still have choices to make, and not all choose well. That gives me plenty of room for fictional descendants, such as Kena and Antony.

CO: Why does human telepathy in this series, differ from other representations in sci-fi, including your own Agents of Rivelt novel?

SR: I can’t help but chuckle over this. Ever since I saw Spock do a mind meld, I have been fascinated with telepathy. I’ve imagined it dozens of ways and considered all sorts of ramifications. For me, the story’s purpose drives the flavor of telepathy. Alas, Kena and Tracy (of Rivelt) can never meet.

Telepathy’s purpose in the Diverse series is to show the intrinsic differences between the alien races. Those differences create tremendous potential, but also challenges. I tucked an allegory into this, which refers to the uniqueness of every person. If only we could see past our surface variations, and recognize the amazing potential within each individual.

I want to thank Sharon so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I highly recommend her books. Great for fans of Star Trek, a clean alternative to the Orville, readers of Left Behind will be thrilled, and anyone who says that Revelation means there will never be deep space travel, need this book.

Author bio:

Sharon Rose photo I started writing when I was seven years old. Okay, My Life as a Flying Squirrel may have had a couple spelling errors, but my classmates loved it.

Plenty of life has happened since that first story, and I’ve come to realize the things that fascinate me. People. Communication. Culture. Personality. Viewpoints. Beliefs. Anything that makes each of us beautifully unique. Small wonder that my art spills out in story form.

It was only a matter of time before I just had to share my stories. I’ve published science fiction and have some fantasy novels coming in the future.

When I’m not writing or reading, I may be traveling, enjoying gardens, or searching for unique coffee shops with my husband. We live in Minnesota, USA, famed for its mosquitoes—uh, I mean 10,000 lakes and vibrant seasons.

Christmas Spirit and Havok

You know I spend so much time using this blog to spotlight other writers and their books that I almost forget to tell everyone when I publish something.

I wrote a Christmas story and it got accepted into an anthology. That anthology is out now, has been for a while now. Hmm, sorry about that. Introducing:

2019 Christmas Spirit Short Story Anthology

These are not your mother’s holiday stories! The authors of the 2019 Christmas Spirit Short Story Challenge, hosted by Michelle Francik, were tasked with writing short stories the evoked the “Christmas Spirit.” That could mean tidings and joy or it could mean the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future! This anthology covers the whole spectrum-from love, joy, and anticipation to depression, revenge and redemption. Whether you’re a scrooge or a holiday lover, you’ll find something to make you laugh, think, and hope.

Inside this festive collection you can find my story “Holiday Cheer.” The title is ironic in that the main character has no cheer in his heart.

It’s also a serious story with themes that I don’t recommend for children. The editor of the anthology even put a trigger warning before it.

Here’s the first few lines:

***************

T’was the day before Christmas and one man had a plan.

He would ruin the holiday for everyone in the land.

He never liked Christmas. The absolute worst time of the year.

What right had people to be happy when he felt no cheer.

Hypocrites. Stupid. How he hated them all.

He hated the people who passed him, leaving the Mall.

Their arms full of bags and laughing on phones.

He hated the bell ringer and his partner on trombone.

Staring guilt into each person who passed the red kettle,

Dues to peace and good-will they must settle.

*****************

Yes it’s a rhyming story and I have no regrets. Are you interested in reading the rest?

And HAVOK free story:

Also today only (December 16th, 2019) I have a flash story published on http://gohavok.com.

The title is Snow Blind. And every story published this month is based on a song.

Which song is mine based on? You’ll have to guess.

I’d love it if you’d pop over and give it a read.

A Storm Grows: Poem Feature

Today on the blog I have a special feature. Author Janeen Ippolito writes exciting fantasy novels, but today I’m talking about her newest poetry anthology. She is letting me share one of her poems with you, I’ll tell you how it makes me feel and then Janeen will share background about it in her own words.

Once upon a time

the great clock

broke

and there was no one

to fix it

(so the stories were ever

untold)

What I get out of this poem:

I love this poem for the imagery that it invokes.  I really relate to the concept of feeling broken and not having the energy for writing or anything really. Yes many stories have gone untold.

The not having anyone to fix it, is what I feel like when people tell me to push through or suck it up. It’s not that easy.

From the author:

For me, the inspiration for that poem came from trying to deal with emotions. Sometimes when I’m dealing with emotions that are difficult to place, it feels like I’m a broken machine, trying to examine my own innards while being unable to repair them—or voice them. I’m intellectually aware that something isn’t right, but it doesn’t feel like me. It’s frustrating because I’m often attuned to emotions around me, which tend to shove aside my own feelings. I’m still working through acknowledging and figuring out my feelings (therapy is helping).

Janeen-016Janeen Ippolitos beleives you should own your unique words! She writes steampunk fantasy, urban fantasy, and poetry, plus she creates writing resources, including the World Building Made Easy series. She’s an experienced teacher, editor, author coach, marketer, and is the leader of Uncommon Universes Press, a small traditional science fiction and fantasy publishing house. She’s also the cohost of the podcast Indie Book Magic. In her spare time, Janeen enjoys sword-fighting, reading, pyrography, and eating brownie batter. Two of her goals are eating fried tarantulas and traveling to Antarctica.

From the back cover:

it is not
an evil
to thunder
shriek
scream lightning
across the sky

A poetry anthology of those who have remained unspoken for too long.

Who have silenced their hearts and souls.
Who want to break free and be heard.

There is healing in the storm and growth in rain-tears.
And always, always a way forward.

No matter what.

Inspiration from Janeen Ippolito’s stories, life experiences, and artistic intake (books/movies/music/art). Includes a link at the end to exclusive, behind-the-scenes inspiration and commentary on various poems.
