FANtastic Interview with author R. J. Metcalfe:

CO: You are making your series into a movie or TV series. All the actors are begging for a part and you can have your pick. Who plays the leads?

RJ: Oh, golly. That’s tough, but probably not for the reason you’d think. I’m notoriously bad at remembering who is who when it comes to actors. That’s my husband’s forte. Lol. Ummm…

Ben: Liam Hemsworth

Jade: Karen Gillain

Zak: Alexis Papas

Slate: Ewan McGregor

Krista: Letitia Wright

Briar: Michael B. Jordan

Garnet: Rachel Hurd Wood (if older)

Victor: Luke Evans

Geist: I have an awesome picture pinned on my character board on Pinterest, but I have yet to figure out the models name!

Kerlee: Alan Tudyk

Raine: Q’orianka Kilcher

Finn: Jonathan Goldsmith

Doctor Jaxton: Ken Leung

Brandon: Cary Elwes

Samantha: She’s based off the real-life Samantha Stoner, so I’d probably beg Sam to play herself, lol.

Andre: Josh Holloway

Samuel Thistle: Jimmy Jean-Louis

Lord Everett: Zachary Quinto

Queen Violet: Viola Davis

Prince Weston: Reece King

Christopher: Song Jae Rim

CO: Wow that’s quite a cast, let’s hope a movie gets made soon so we can then in action. Though I’m afraid that Liam and Karen might be too old for Ben and Jade. Still it’s a great dream.

I love the dragons in you story world. I couldn’t help but picture them as dinosaurs. Was this intentional? Are dragons really dinosaurs?
RJ: Excellent observation! Yes! Dragons are really dinosaurs. Plodders are stegosaurus. Seekers are allosaurus. Stalkers are velociraptors. Terrors are pterodactyls. And so on and so forth.

From the very beginning of the story planning, dinosaurs and dragons are one and the same. Just…with magic. Some ordinary animals have a spark of magic to them, but not all, and let’s be honest. That’s not nearly as fascinating as dragons.

CO: Hooray! This makes me very happy. I love Dinosaurs and Dragons and that they are one and the same is one of my favorite theories.

At the end of Skyfarer, we learn a startling revelation about Ben’s past. The question is, will this play heavily into the events of Void Born?Quote 1

RJ: **laughs** Ohh, yes. Ben’s origin will be playing quite the role in the following books. But that’s all I can really say about that. You know how it is. ^_^

CO: Skyfarer was full of plot twists and secrets. Can we expect more of the same, or are you out of twists?

RJ: I wouldn’t say I’m out of twists just yet. The flavor of them may change, as they’ll need to keep up with the story as it moves forward, but there’s still plenty of adventure, surprises, and yes, twists to come.

And it would be completely to fair to say that I’m equal parts excited and terrified for what’s to come…

CO: If you had to live in Terrene for one year, what would you do to pass the time? Would you even survive?Quote 2

RJ: If I had to live in Terrene for a year, part of me would want to live in Perennia and work there with the land and the things that grow, but I’d definitely need my allergy medicine, or that location could be the death of me. If I could work for Ellie Stohner and be an airship captain, that’d be pretty spiffy, or maybe I’d just settle in Vodan or Lasim as a simple seamstress. It’d be exciting (and a bit scary) to find myself in my own book! (Especially if my characters found out and decided to hunt me down. Eep!)

CO: How many books are planned in the Stones of Terrene, and when can we expect the next one?

RJ: The series itself is four books, and then there’s a prequel, anthology, and a stand-alone. So, grand total (as of the moment): seven books.

Betrayal by Blood and Scars of Time were written before Renegade Skyfarer, so they’re essentially waiting on the back burner until I return to them to finish up the edits and get those out there.

Prequel: Betrayal by Blood (Winter 2019)

Anthology: Scars of Time (*Autumn 2019)

Renegade Skyfarer

Void Born

Traitor’s Crown (Spring 2019)

Blood Bond (*Winter 2020)

Phoenix Rising** (*Spring 2020)

*Approximate due dates

**Working title subject to change

CO: Sounds like there is plenty more to look forward to. Thank you so much for answering my questions and for hanging out on the blog today.

So you’ve read that title and now you’re wondering what Rothana mean. Well obviously it’s a book title. But what it means is that the sequel to Haladaya is one step closer to being in my hands.

About Rothana:

Sylvie Imanthiya is desperate to lead Faerie well and deepen the bond with her husband, former

in disaster, stranding her and Taylan in the Deathrealm, and stripping the kingdom from her.
With Faerie in chaos, Zad and Diza are separated once again: Zad to reconcile with an old

But Casimir claims that a greater evil seeks to destroy both realms, an evil that Diza’s unique
death magic can hold at bay—if she could only remember how.
In the Deathrealm, Taylan is succumbing to the lure of specters from his past, and pushing away
Sylvie’s love. Overwhelmed by decay and darkness, Sylvie must summon unexpected magic

FANtastic Interview with Pam Halter

Today I have another Fantastic Interview. Today’s guest is Pam Halter and she is sharing about her debut novel Fairyeater.

Here’s a bit about the book first:

9781943788040-Perfect.inddAll fifteen-year-old Akeela has ever wanted is an ordinary family who will love her. But the only mother she has ever known is the old hag, Krezma, who berates her night and day. Why did the old woman even take her in?

But Krezma knows her charge is no ordinary child. She can see the auras surrounding living things and can communicate with fairies. And the birthmark on her palm reveals a secret Krezma must hold close for the child’s safety.

A secret that the witch, Tzmet, hunts for night and day, drying and eating fairies for the power they contain. When Akeela discovers her fate lies in being the next Fairy Guardian, all hope for an ordinary life dissipates like the dreams they were. She must protect the fairies from the witch—and an even darker power that threatens them all.

Akeela is unwillingly thrust into an adventure that will not end until she decides to accept her fate and give up on her dream.

Maybe even her life.

And now . . .

A FANtastic interview with Pam Halter:

1. You are asked by the casting director who you envision as the main characters of your novel Fairyeater. What do you tell her.

This is always a hard question for me because I’m just not up on who’s popular, especially younger actors. So, I don’t know who would play Akeela, but I can see the fabulous Bette Davis playing Tzmet because she does whatever’s needed for a part. For Krezma, maybe Maggie Smith. For Tar, Karl Urban.

I love Maggie Smith for this role, and Karl Urban is one of my favorite actors. Love these choices.

 2. Anyone who has met you knows that you are the Fairy Queen. What made you first love fairies? Or what is your earliest memory of fairies?

I’ve always loved fantasy, and when I realized I wanted to write it, I chose to feature fairies, because 12 years ago, fairies were not popular. And I wanted to brand myself with something, so I worked to become The Fairy Lady (or whatever anyone wants to call it.) Now fairies are very popular, so I’m not as unique as I’d like to think. That being said, I also like making up my own fae groups, and that’s helped me in the unique area.

 3. Fairyeater may be your debut novel but it’s not your first published book. How does your experience with novel writing differ from Children’s book writing? Which do you enjoy more?

Wow, picture book writing is about as different as you can imagine. I enjoy them both, but I had to learn to add to my longer stories. I was so used to telling a story in 800 words or less, it was difficult to add description and more narrative. I’m not one who likes too much description anyway – get me to the story! Haha. But I have a fabulous mentor who tells me things like, “Linger a bit longer here” or “What is she feeling here?” “What does it look like?” Stuff like that.

I’ve also learned you don’t always need to add a paragraph to expand the moment. Sometimes just a sentence is perfect.

Here’s something to consider, though. People think writing for children is easier because there are less words. But picture books can be harder to write because you need to take a 10,000 word story and tell is in 800 words or less. Every word counts.

Sounds like Children’s book writing is a lot like Flash Fiction.

 4. Obviously fairies come in many flavors, (Pun intended, because Fairyeater) Hahaha! which do you prefer. The small and magical, elemental kind or the Majestic and mystical, Fae?

I prefer more realistic, beautiful fairies. And here’s a secret: I can’t stand Tinker Bell. Seriously. I want to smack her. I don’t really consider her a fairy. She’s more of a pixie, I think. But she’s really annoying.

Fairies don’t have to be life sized or teeny weeny. For me, it depends on the what the story requires.

I love the fairy art of Amy Brown and Cicely Mary Barker.

 5. I think my favorite character is Anon the Faun. He’s fun and sweet. He is also on the autistic spectrum. I love that there is an autistic character, but I love more that he is a mythical being. What was the inspiration for this unique character?

Actually, Anon has Down’s Syndrome. The inspiration for him is my daughter, Anna. Since I have a special needs adult daughter, it’s a normal part of my life, so pretty much all the stories I write have characters with some kind of special need.

Anna does not have Down’s, though. She has Pervasive Developmental Disorder, which is on the Spectrum. She’s mostly non-verbal, and I needed a verbal character, so I chose Down’s. I’ve known several kids with Down’s from Anna’s class when she was in school, as well as kids with all various special needs and abilities. It simply felt normal to me to included Anon.

I’ve also included Tar and Ode Janmar who both have physical disabilities.

 6. Akeela is the Fairy Guardian, but fairies are magical, Why do they need guarding?

A Guardian doesn’t always mean “to guard someone”, it’s also a person who supports and helps. When Riss’aird was creating the BIG spell, more than just fairy magic was needed to combat it, so the Guardian was created. I do give details in the book and am planning to go into a lot more detail in the Prequel, which I’m working on now.

 7. Without giving spoilers, where do you see the Fairy Gaurdian series going from here? How many books are planned? What are you working on next?

Oops – I gave that away in the previous question. That’s okay. I’m working on the Prequel now. A friend suggested it might be interesting to see how a person becomes a Dark Lord. I thought that was a great idea and I’m running with it.

And because we typically like sets of three, I do have a basic plot idea for the third story. And writers will get this – that story wants to be written NOW. I keep making notes and tell it to quiet down and wait its turn. Haha!

 8. In the Fairyeater there is a Minister character who leads worship to a single creator. would you classify Fairyeater as Christian fiction? How does Celtar differ from our God.

Every world has some kind of religious system or beliefs. In Fairyeater, I chose to have the main set of people serve the One True God, who is the God of the Bible. I gave Him the name Celtar on the advice of a senior editor from Scholastic who I met at a conference. Back then, publishing houses were leery of using the Christian God in fantasy, so she said to simply give Him a name. But not everyone believes in Him or worships Him. The Kazmura are atheists, and the Salt Dwarves worship a goddess.

I also chose to stay more Old Testament, but not real in-depth. That means, no Jesus dying to save sinners. I don’t know why. It just felt appropriate for the story to not include that part of my faith.

I don’t classify Fairyeater as Christian fiction. It’s high fantasy, more specifically, quest fantasy, which happens to be written by a Christian, so my worldview comes through.

My business cards describe me as an “Inspirational Fantasy Author” and at the bottom, I have “Everyone is created with a purpose.” Christianity is part of who I am, so even if I were to choose to write a story without a higher being, my worldview would still come through.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog, Cathrine!

The honor was all mine.

One flew through the dragon cover reveal.

Today’s cover reveal is for a steampunk romance that I am looking forward to reading. The author is C.S. Johnson who you may remember from a FAntastic Interview she did about her Sleeping Beauty retelling called Once upon a princess. Read it here.

A Chinese Legend. A British Secret. Star-Crossed Lovers with Incompatible Magic.

cover reveal graphicBrixton Flew works as a professor of wielder instruction at Rembrandt Academy, hoping to erase the regrets of his youth along with the resulting debt. But when he comes face to face with his biggest regret—the woman who broke his heart, Adelaide Favan—Brixton soon realizes his troubles have only begun.

Unable to control her magic, Adelaide knew leaving Brixton was the only way to protect him when they were younger. Now she discovers he is the key to recovering the Dragon Eyes, a legendary treasure connected to her magic and her family’s disgraced legacy—and she knows the risk is great, to both his life and her heart.

With others seeking the power of the Dragon Eyes, Brixton and Adelaide must outwit their foes and face down their families to save London from an ancient legend that sleeps beneath the magic portal in their city.

But the renewed passion growing between them may prove to be the greater peril …

One Flew Through the Dragon Heart is the first book in a new steampunk series by C.S. Johnson, blending together history, romance, mecha-dragons and magic against the glittering backdrop of 1880’s Victorian London.

CS JohnsonC. S. Johnson is the author of several young adult novels, including sci-fi and fantasy adventures such as the Starlight Chronicles series, the Once Upon a Princess saga, and the Divine Space Pirates trilogy. Now for the shiny cover:

51whzhtwuul._sy346_

 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HRW64SM

The release date is December 21st.

The author graciously allowed me to include an excerpt. Because she knew as soon as you saw the cover you would want to start reading right away.

Excerpt from One Flew through the Dragon Heart:

The door creaked open with the same welcoming familiarity it always had as Brixton stepped inside. He took off his greatcoat, and at once, the small townhouse seemed to reach out with its own essence, bathing him in the scent of oranges and animals, flooding him with the sensation of a million memories. He breathed it in and reveled in it. Deep down, nothing in the world could dislodge his home from his heart—not the Board at Rembrandt, not the government, not even all his secret hopes and dreams—and there was unspeakable comfort in knowing that.

“We’re in the kitchen, Brix. Come on in. I’ve just finished pulling out a rack of biscuits.”

Brixton sighed, both in exasperation and gratitude. His mother was never surprised when he arrived, no matter the hour. He used to wonder if she had a spy in her service, but he knew now, having his own talent for magic, that she was able to sense emotions. Her talent made her one of the most accomplished veterinarians in London.

That was also why the house always smelled of all sorts of creatures. Philippa Flew often brought her work home with her, and today, Brixton saw as he walked into the next room, was no exception.

“Who does that belong to?” he asked, gesturing toward the large peacock sitting on the table.

The large fan of its tail sprouted at his voice, making him jump back as the hundreds of colorful feathers unfolded before him.

The peacock squawked, clearly sore at the disruption.

Luella’s laughter rang through the room as Brixton recovered. He glanced through the feather-fan of exotic bird feathers to see Luella’s blonde curls bouncing as she walked around from the other side of the table.

“It’s Mrs. Fordyce’s,” Luella said. “He has a broken leg, so Mum brought him home for me to help take care of.”

“Why do you need to help him if it’s just a broken leg?” Brixton rolled his eyes. “It seems silly for you to have to use your magic on him.”

“Come on. Don’t be so stuffy.”

“I’m just concerned. You really ought to be more careful when you use your magic.” Brixton sat down on the chair at the far end of the table. “If you’re not, the mage-ragers will realize you have plenty of talent, too, and they’ll come running to sign you up to work at Rembrandt along with me.”

“Oh, Brix. It sounds like you had another hard day. I thought as much when you came in.” Philippa sighed. Her hair, a shade darker than Brixton’s and lined with wispy grays, snapped behind her in a braid as she hurried to press a loving kiss to her oldest child’s forehead.

Brixton might have waved her off when he had been younger, but now he welcomed his mother’s affections. He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek in return as Luella giggled again.

“I would not mind going to Rembrandt, but don’t think they would want me to teach the newbies just yet,” Luella said, jutting her pointed chin forward proudly. “I’m only fifteen.”

“You know as well as I do that some magic comes in early.”

Many of the first wielders experienced it as a secondary trait, one that appeared toward the beginning of adulthood. As Mendel and Darwin’s theories speculated, magic moved down through the bloodlines, and as the talents were able to be recognized earlier, it became generally accepted that most magic began to appear during adolescence.

But there were still the occasional stories of talented children who knew of their magic long before it appeared, and Brixton knew that a great many of those stories were true.

After all, he had been best friends with one of the most powerful wielders London had ever seen.

“There’s no need to brag,” Luella said with a huff. “We all know that you were a prodigy right from birth. The rest of us will bow down to you one day, I’m sure, but in the meantime, the requirements for specialized magical instruction start at sixteen. Even you didn’t have to go until then.”

“I was actually thinking of—”

Brixton went silent as his chest tightened, his heart clenched, and his fingers shook.

He had only just barely stopped himself.

He had come so bloody close to saying her name.

It was appalling to think after nearly four years he still thought of her—thought of her, dreamed of her, but never spoke of her.

How could he? Remembering her was like lighting himself on fire and forgetting how much it burned.

Faithless Blog tour

Faithless Blog Tour Banner

So You may already be familiar with Faithless from the amazing Cover reveal that I hosted last month. Read it here if you forgot.

So As you may know the first book in the Ironfire legacy introduced readers to the world of Sekastra, where shifter races dwell. Readers of Lawless are already familiar with dragon shifters. Today author Janeen Ippolito is here with a Be Our Guest Post about the second major shifter race. Unicorns.

When Peacemakers Go Dark: Death Unicorn World Building

             MapOfSekastra

In the world of The Ironfire Legacy, each continent or major area has their own shifter race: dragons, seals (re: selkies), (were)wolves, and (death) unicorns. Out of all of the races, the death unicorns have the hardest history—and my inspiration came from a combination of existing mythology and realities.

Unicorn horns. Unicorn hair. Powdered unicorn hooves or emulsified unicorn ears. All common ingredients in potions in a lot of fantasy and fairy tale worlds. But what if the unicorns were sentient? What if they were shifters? What if they had souls—in fact, what if they were the most soulful race on the planet? Suddenly, using their body parts as ingredients sounds downright barbaric and disturbing—similar to the persecution of those with albinism in Africa.

I explore the persecution of unicorns in my fluffy-with-a-dark-side short story in the humorous romance anthology How To Catch A Unicorn. But that story takes place hundreds of years before The Ironfire Legacy series, in the country of Elotrin, located to the south of Sekastra. And within those hundred years, a tenuous peace gives way to a genocide of unicorns, both for their body parts, and also to prevent them from opposing the bad guys who fear unicorn soul magic.

Unicorn of Judgment (1)  The unicorns took the adjective of “death” both to honor the losses of the genocide, and to own their new natures. They chose to use magical enhancement to weaponize themselves and protect their people from utter annihilation. Their soul-empathy, used to comfort, was turned into a method to induce terror. While unicorn blood still heals, death unicorns can also secrete a substance that coats their horns with deadly poison. In battle mode, their eyes flash red, their aura smells of sulfur, and they are foes to be reckoned with.

But as a people, they still deeply grieve what was done to them, and what they have now become. After their queen, Maira Ukerys, destroyed their foes, the death unicorns fled to Sekastra. At that time, they were received into the Scepter of Justice, the fifth city-state that had been the home of the dragons. The old dragon king and queen, as well as the ruling dragon-human council, were wary about the refugees, but finally gave them a reservation of land called the Lost Refuge and agreed to let history record that unicorns were extinct. And this is where the death unicorns have lived for fifty years, seldom venturing out of their refuge. Always careful and secretive and haunted by their past. Death unicorns live for at least two hundred years, so the genocide is fresh in the minds of the elders, and those memories are passed around in the herd as a whole.

Rather grim, hm? Well, within their herd, the death unicorns are still deeply caring and compassionate. During the dragon-human war, some death unicorn healers would emerge from the Lost Refuge and aid the injured soldiers and spies among the Lawless. And they refuse to fight on behalf of the Lawless, as they still hold true to the Rule of Harming: for every injury or death inflicted by someone, that person must equally heal or save another person.

Yet, there are some among the death unicorns who resent their refugee status. Who are wary of the dragons. Who see this time of wartime upheaval as a perfect opportunity to claim what was taken from them decades earlier. A home.

And such individuals are very dangerous, indeed…

Mythic Orbits Blog Tour: kick off

Welcome, it is my great honor to kick off a new blog tour today. You may remember when I posted about Mythic Orbits Volume two’s release. Well, now we are spreading the word about the whole Mythic Orbits series.

About Mythic Orbits

You might be wondering what in the world “Mythic Orbits ” refers to. I’m not sure if it will help reassure you to tell you the name Mythic Orbits was simply intended to suggest both science fiction and fantasy and to identify these books in a distinctive way, along with any that follow after in the series.

Just as these anthologies represent a wide variety of genres, there is no common theme to these tales, though the subject of empathy or lack thereof does come up in them repeatedly. This is most definitely not an anthology about orbits which are somehow mystical.

These anthologies are a showcase for the best stories submitted in the general field of speculative fiction by Christian authors. They represent a wide variety of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and paranormal.

The main goal of these anthologies was to demonstrate that Christian authors can write speculative fiction well. Stories with a wide range of appeal are included here, mostly serious, some with humor, some with “happy endings” and others clearly not so happy. All of them worth reading.

Some of these stories feature Christian characters in speculative fiction worlds, some make use of Christian themes either subtly or overtly, while some have no discernible connection to Christianity at all. Christian authors are featured in this collection rather than specifically Christian-themed stories.Mythic Orbits

So, is it widely-known all over the world that Christians write speculative fiction?

Well, clearly Christians who themselves are speculative fiction writers know what they write. But does everybody else?

Especially when we’re talking about theologically conservative Christians, Evangelicals of some sort, professed Bible-believing Christians, do people know about their works? Is it legitimate for people to wonder if writers with personal convictions along these lines produce speculative fiction, that is, science fiction and fantasy and related genres like LitRPG, paranormal, and horror?

These books provide an answer: Not only do Christian writers produce speculative fiction stories, they write some great ones.

Enjoy these examples!

Now it’s time for the author of The Tail of Two Kitlings to tell us about her cats.

A Be Our Guest Post, by:

Sharon Hughson

sharoncatphotoTell us about the cat(s) in your life.

My first cat was a tiger-striped barn cat I named Tiger. Original, I know. Since then, I’ve attempted to have at least one cat at all times, and I’m a firm believer in the adage, “A house is not a home without a cat and books.”

These days, I have three “rescued” cats. The oldest is a gray and white medium shorthair tabby named Mustang. Someone abandoned him in our former neighborhood, and when I saw him wandering around, I put out food. My husband claimed I was NOT allowed to feed him or adopt him. That was eight or nine years ago.

Cattin’ Hook is eight. A friend of ours trapped him using a slice of pizza as bait when he was just a kitten. He gets his name because his tail is folded so it feels like a hook if you touch it. (This is where I got the inspiration for the tail at the end of “The Tail of Two Kitlings.”)

Four years ago, my youngest son and his then fiancé (now wife) brought me our sweet little girl kitty. Tweetie Paws is a tuxedo cat with a loving, playful personality. They adopted her from a rescue organization. My husband was traveling when they gifted me with the cat and he swore we weren’t keeping her. Ha! Now he loves all three cats nearly as much as I do.

Driven to the hilt blog tour

Today I’m just droping a quick spotlight to let everyone know that author D.G. Lamb is releasing the third book in his Driven to the Hilt series on November 1.

What’s this? You say you haven’t heard of the Driven to the Hilt series? Well it’s a good thing you’re here because I’m going to tell you all about it.

side by side(24)

About book one:

Young Joshua finds himself trapped outside the mining colony on the planet Cypress Driven to the Hilt Book 1 small copyGrove. He faces a dark rainforest infested with a creature so deadly, it has kept all humans confined to their only settlement for decades. If he can manage to survive there, he will then have to brave the even darker dangers of the colony’s criminal underworld.

It’s a fight for survival, a premature coming of age in an environment demanding resiliency, inventiveness, and self-reliance. But when teetering on the sharp edge of stark choices, can Joshua afford to consider right and wrong, or does expediency rule the day?

Debut author DG Lamb, a clinical neuropsychologist, uses his understanding of posttraumatic stress symptoms to inject psychological authenticity and complexity into Joshua’s personality, creating a damaged, but endearing character.

Buy it here.

About book two:

Driven to the Hilt Book 2 006 copyAn inscrutable stranger offers him a deal that seems too good to be true. And it is. Joshua soon faces new challenges to survive in a place he had not believed was even real.

Having successfully evaded the colony’s underworld and corrupt police, Joshua finds himself trapped alone in a sterile white room. But it is no ordinary room, changing and shifting in response to his reactions and behaviors. Ultimately, he will have to make a choice… one that will forever change the direction of his life.

DG Lamb creates a dynamic world full of new challenges and lessons for an endearing young hero. Lamb’s extensive experience as a clinical neuropsychologist and his understanding of posttraumatic stress symptoms injects psychological authenticity and complexity into Joshua and a host of engaging new characters.

About book three:

Kidnapped and brought to an unknown planet, Joshua Vernon must lead a team of diverse teens in training for deeply covert missions.  As the strains of head-to-head competitions rise for the team, the risks become extreme, stretching his leadership skills to their limits.

All the while, mysterious antagonists maneuver from the shadows, some manipulating outcomes for their own sinister goals, others seeking to eliminate young Joshua altogether.  Even with the help of his new friends Drayev and Sawyer, and the support of Dr. Calyse and Hobo, can Joshua survive this new adventurous world and its perilous threats? The demands will eventually exact a heavy price.

The third book releases November first.

There is no Pre-Order.

But you can RSVP to the facebook party on Nov. 2nd so you can make sure you remember when it comes out.

About the Author:

D G Lamb is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist. His day job involves helping people to become more independent after some type of neurological injury. In addition to a doctorate in Clinical Psychology, he has a Master’s in Art Therapy. He has also worked with law enforcement officers to deal with PTSD after critical incidents. While recovering from prostate cancer surgery, his son suggested he try his hand at creative writing. Although his professional experiences certainly informed aspects of this story, he also drew upon his love of cooking and backpacking the mountain trails of Arizona (where unlike Cypress Grove, it rarely rains). The Deepest Cut was his debut novel and this followup Forging the Blade was published June 2018.

I’m more beast than beauty

Today I’m part of the blog tour for Kill the beast. A book I’ve waited a very long time to read. I just adore all things beauty and the beast. So when I heard about this retelling I just knew I had to have it.

From the back cover:

9781943788040-Perfect.inddRo remembers the castle before. Before the gates closed. Before silence overtook the kingdom. Before the castle disappeared. Now it shimmers to life one night a year, seen by her alone.
Once a lady, now a huntress, Ro does what it takes to survive—just like the rest of the kingdom plunged into despair never before known. But a beast has overtaken the castle. A beast that killed the prince and holds the castle and kingdom captive in his cruel power. A beast Ro has been hired to kill. Thankful the mystery of the prince’s disappearance has been solved, furious the magical creature has killed her hero, Ro eagerly accepts the job to end him. But things are not as they seem.
Trapped in the castle, a prisoner alongside the beast, Ro wonders what she should fear most: the beast, the magic that holds them both captive, or the one who hired her to kill the beast.
A Beauty and the Beast retelling.

Michele-Israel-Harper-HeadshotMichele Israel Harper spends her days as a work-at-home mom and her nights typing away furiously on her laptop. Sleep? Sometimes… She has her Bachelor of Arts in history, is slightly obsessed with all things French—including Jeanne d’Arc and La Belle et la Bête— and loves curling up with a good book more than just about anything else. Author of Wisdom & Folly: Sisters, Zombie Takeover, Beast Hunter, and Kill the Beast, Michele prays her involvement in writing, editing, and publishing will touch many lives in the

Why I Identify with the Beast: A Dive-in Review

Beauty and the beast is my favorite Disney movie for one reason. Belle is an introverted, book reading, brunette. I am an introverted, book reading, brunette. That is where the comparison ends.

I am not patient and I am not kind. I lose my temper and get irrationally angry, I judge people by how they look. I would rather wallow in self pity bemoaning the unfairness of life, than take any responsibility for my own actions.

I am much more Beast than Beauty.

Beast Hunter

Me and author Michele Israel Harper at the costume banquet during Realm Makers. I’m the beast.

This is why a Beauty and the Beast retelling is made or broken by one thing. The Beast.

The beast gets the story ultimately he’s the one who changes. It is literally his character arch. He gets to grow up. He gets to make up for his selfish ways and because of that he is more relate-able.

So why is the beast so overlooked? Why is he, so often, not even given a name? (I’m looking at you Disney.) You could go on about the patriarchy and their desire to make women conform to their ideals of demure servitude. You could cry Girl Power and write essays about how beauty is symbolic of wresting the power from the aforementioned patriarchy.

Or you can do what Michele Israel Harper did. She gave us this amazingly flawed beast who learns his lesson and finds love and learns that action is always better than self pity. He has a name!

But she didn’t stop there.

Michele wrote an amazingly flawed beauty too. Rosette is angry and hot tempered and believes rumors and judges the beast on his fierceness. She won’t listen. And she literally has murder in her heart. The book is called Kill the Beast after all.

This isn’t just a Beauty who feels like a real person. She feels like me. I can relate to a beauty who makes mistakes and who isn’t held up as some unattainable example of what women should be. And yes she still likes books.

Michele based her novel on the original french version but she also includes many Disney nods for those who can’t separate fairy tale from mouse tail.

Finally a retelling about Beauty and the Beast, that makes me feel for both Beast and Beauty.

I just want to keep Gushing about the wonderfully twisted ending but I shouldn’t spoil it for you. At least you don’t have to wait four years to read it. Because it’s out now.

Buy it here:

http://www.love2readlove2writepublishing.com/books/kill-the-beast/

9781943788040-Perfect.inddThere is also a prequel novella set just before Kill the Beast. It’s called Beast Hunter and you can find it here: https://www.love2readlove2writepublishing.com/books/beast-hunter/

A curse has overtaken Ro’s kingdom, blackening the soil, wiping out crops, and bringing ruin. The only people who thrive are the huntsmen, brought in to stem the flow of ravenous creatures. When Ro kills a wolf, an idea begins to form. Could she become a huntress? Before she can act, her father trades her life for his—to a magical beast.

It provides a lot of back story and is just super fun in it’s own right.

I’m giving away a signed copy of the novella Beast Hunter (signed by the author not by me) to one of you lucky readers. Just click through and fill out the Raffle Copter form. (unfortunately this is a physical prize so I need to limit this to United States Only.)
