BOOK DESCRIPTION

An outcast lady. A trapped prince. A slimy scheme to overturn a dynasty.

She’s marked by her past.

Lady Zeraphethina (Zeth, please) has finally escaped imprisonment by a malevolent hag and is ready to marry her prince—only he’s been transformed into a frog. At least, she thinks he’s been transformed. Frogs aren’t known for talking, and her relations with the royals at the court are already strained without making outlandish claims. Instead, she turns to her tinkering skills, creating a trinket that might turn him back. Or make things worse.

He must free his people.

As the carefree youngest prince, Milos figured committing to his true love was enough responsibility. But now he finds that not only is he a captive amphibian, but so are many servants from the palace. And some of his fellow prisoners are looking far too comfortable in their frog bodies. Burdened by their plight, he must risk his life to rescue them and discover the culprits behind the slimy affliction.

They fight for their future.

Bound by chains of curse and law, Milos and Zeth must work together to end the enchantment and bring the culprits to justice. Otherwise, Milos and his people will lose themselves and become frogs forever.

A Spoonful of Malaysian Magic Cover Reveal

Hi, I am coming at you from St. Louis, Missouri at the Realm Makers writers’ conference. Today my friend Anna is revealing the cover for the Anthology she edited and helped publish. The title is a Spoonful of Malaysian Magic. If you’re curious why, then it would help to know that all the authors in the anthology, along with Anna herself, are from Malaysia. I think the title and the cover reflect that perfectly. See for yourself:

A Spoonful of Malaysian Magic: An Anthology

A burong descends from Tansang Kenyalang in the midst of a dire catastrophe. A shapeshifter frees Kedah from the dreaded Raja Bersiong only to uncover a darker secret. A woman learns to channel her family’s food magic. A young huntress of supernatural creatures charts her own path of love.

This anthology of short stories offers fresh takes on Malaysian folklore and fairy tales, adds enchantment to the ordinary, and bursts with new, wonderful flavours. Stir a little spoonful of magic into your tea, whether you’re from these shores or from far away.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Collin Yeoh has wanted to be a writer all his life, and indeed has been writing professionally for 17 years. At some point, he remembered that advertising copy wasn’t what he wanted to write growing up as a lonely bookworm kid. He now finds writing things that have plots, characters, themes, genres, and that won’t be subject to notes like “please include more product benefits” a lot more fun. He lives in Kuala Lumpur.

Hamizah Adzmi is a storyteller and currently works as the Knowledge Mobilization Programme Officer for Musawah, an international women’s rights NGO. She pursued a MA in Creative Writing under the Chevening scholarship in 2016/2017, where she focused on writing fiction revolving around Malaysian women. Previously, she was in the media industry and taught Creative Writing in universities. Her interests include books, writing, and feminism. https://www.twitter.com/omgthisbook

Ilnaz A. Faizal enjoys writing stories that cross between the genres of horror, fantasy, and romance. She also writes poetry and screenplays. Her favourite authors are Sarah Dessen and R.L Stine. When she’s not writing, she can either be found reading, embroidering cartoon characters, or sleeping. https://twitter.com/Ilnaz_Faizal

Ismim Putera (he/him) is a poet and writer from Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. His works can be found in online journals as well as anthologised in To Let the Light In Anthology of Life and Death, Instinct: Asian Speculative Poetry 2021, Colours of Tapestry 2: Stories from Asia, Unsaid: An Asian Anthology, and recently in The Big Book of Malaysian Horror. His poem “Durian Blossoms” won third place in the 7th Singapore Poetry Contest (2021) and “Jantina” was longlisted for the Malaysian Poetry Competition (2021). https://twitter.com/ismimputera

Joni Chng is a writer and photographer based in Malaysia, born and raised in Kedah. She draws a lot of inspiration from diverse cultures around the world, particularly from the Far East and Southeast Asia, with speculative elements of her own invention thrown in for good measure. Her work has appeared in several anthologies and magazines, including The Big Book of Malaysian Horror Stories (Fixi Novo, 2022), Night Terrors: Vol. 21 (Scare Street, 2022), Tainted Love: Women in Horror (Twisted Wing productions, 2021), and NANG 3: Fiction (2017).

Joshua Lim writes stories that reimagine the world around him. His fantasy short story “Generation Game Night” was shortlisted for the Malaysian Short Story Writing Competition 2022, and his other works have appeared in Fixi Novo’s anthologies KL Noir: Magic (2021) and The Big Book of Malaysian Horror Stories (2022). He is currently a medical student who finds time in between classes to write fiction and overthink his future.

A medical officer and quality manager by profession, Julia Alba has been writing fiction since she was a teenager. She loves a great story no matter the genre or the medium, whether it’s a book, a video game, an anime or a movie. Her bad habit is her inability to resist buying too much Harry Potter merchandise. She lives in Perak with her husband and daughter. https://twitter.com/joo_leeyah

They’re also heavily inspired by the D&D games they play, and they’ve always looked up to Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. A Super cover for a Super new book!

If you’ve been reading this blog for a couple years then you know that I am a huge fan of H.L. Burke’s Superheroes series. The newest installment is getting a cover today. This is actually the third boo in her YA spinoff series.

This novel is one I’m very hyped for. Marco is one of my favorite characters in the YA series, because he is an adorkable floof who just wants to do the right thing. He is my innocent little Marco-mallow and he looks so bad-ass on this cover. I am so worried about what this mean author is going to put him through.

When family’s involved, the line between hero and villain can get blurry.

15-year-old Marco Reyes has spent a year at a camp for at-risk superpowered teens, learning to control his fire throwing abilities in hopes of being a superhero someday. With his powers mastered, he wants nothing more than to return to his mother. His mother, though, may not be ready to care for him.

When Marco’s Mom blows off their meeting in San Diego, Marco’s guardians take it as a sign the woman isn’t responsible enough to care for her superpowered son. Marco, though, knows that this time something’s different from his mother’s other absences. He’s convinced someone’s taken her.

Slipping away from the safety of his camp family, Marco follows a clue that leads to a supervillain recruiting agency and allies with a supervillain who is after the same agency for her own reasons. Marco’s camp friends are on his trail, but will he find his mom before they bring him in? Or is his mother simply a pawn in a much deadlier scheme?

To celebrate the pre-order and cover reveal of book 3 in the Supervillain Rescue Project YA Superhero series, book 1 is free, book 2 is 99c, and for a limited time you can pre-order book 3 for 99c as well! Promotion ends February 12th, so act soon!

A character driven series filled with action, found family, and superpowered adventure!

Book 1 (free 2/8-12)

Power On

Jake’s family ties have turned to cuffs.

Born with the ability to fragment his body at a molecular level, Jake Lucas has devoted his life to his uncle’s supervillain gang. When he’s captured by superheroes, he’s certain his life is over at only sixteen.

To Jake’s surprise, he doesn’t end up in prison but at Camp Sable: an intervention project for at-risk super powered teens. Jake’s not interested in rehabilitation. As far as he’s concerned, the camp mentors are just a barrier between him and his true family, the Sand Fox gang.

Forced to work alongside the likewise screwed up duo of fire-powered Marco and electricity manipulator Laleh, Jake waits for the perfect escape opportunity. Having friends and the chance at a real family is more appealing than Jake originally thought, but going soft can cost a supervillain his life. Jake soon finds the forces fighting to control his life threatening to tear him apart.

Will Jake choose to remain the villain his uncle made him, or become the hero his new friends think he can be?

A Young Adult Superhero series featuring found family, friendship, and one superpowered ferret.

Book 2 (99c 2/8-15)

Power Play

It’s dangerous to go alone. Even for superheroes.

Laleh Ashe has found her first real friends at Camp Sable, a refuge for at-risk superpowered teens, but her politically ambitious mother has other plans. Mrs. Ashe is determined to send Laleh to a fancy, overseas boarding school—far from her friends and the life she’s come to love. To drown her sorrows, Laleh agrees to a table top role playing game with her friends, Marco and Jake, as well as the new girl at camp—shy, withdrawn Rian. Too bad no one warned her about Rian’s reality bending superpowers.

Sucked into a fantasy world created by Rian’s imagination, Laleh and her friends must scramble to master their magical new surroundings and complete their quest if they are to have any hope of getting home again.

This magical world is less fun than it sounds, but as Laleh and her friends face the various challenges, Laleh can’t help but remember that all that waits for her in the real world is separation from her friends and a life under the thumb of her overbearing mom. Maybe going home is seriously overrated.

Superheroes meet Portal Fantasy in this second book of the Supervillain Rescue Project Young Adult Series.

Book 3 (99c pre-order)

Power Through

My city is under attack by shadowfiends. Apparently, this is my fault, thanks to the family I’ve never met.

At least the attack interrupted my first couples therapy session with Cendric. Small blessings, right?

Then my long-lost dad—yeah, the one that’s supposed to be dead—shows up to tell me that the shadowfiends are controlled by Raith, an old family member who’s here to recharge his magical batteries by any means necessary, including destroying Pittsburgh and me. Oh, and centuries ago, Raith picked a fight with the local dragons, so they’re after me as well.

Now I have to learn my family’s magic, stop Raith’s path of destruction, and make nice with the dragons. Speaking of which, did I mention my oh-so-quiet secretary has eloped with one of the dragons’ worst enemies?

Personally, all I want for Christmas is to survive until New Year’s. And maybe, a vacation.

Saving her past could cost him his future.

Traumatic experiences have left telepath and former superhero Aiden Powell burned out. Now retired, he wants to focus on his new civilian career as an EMT and his budding romance with former colleague, Tanvi. He has no interest in resuming the dangerous work that cost him both his parents and almost his life.

However, on the anniversary of his mother’s death, a strange woman approaches him. A woman who thinks he’s his father … and also that it’s 1998. Death ray blast or time travel beam? His mother’s heard it both ways.

Nothing involving super powers is ever easy. Aiden and his mother have just hours until the supervillain who took her away from her family the first time arrives in present day Escondido for a contentious reunion.

With time running out, Aiden must race to save his mother while trying to avoid shattering the timeline that contains everyone he loves.

“It’s Aiden’s turn to be the hero . . . he’s not really into it. http://wwww.hlburkeauthor.com

Cover Reveal: The Frog Prince’s Courtship.

So one of my favorite genres is fairy tale retellings. Which is strange because I really value originality in my fiction. (It’s one of the reason’s that fan fiction doesn’t impress me much.) But sometimes having a formulaic plot to adhere to really lets the author shine by putting more of their energy into producing original characters and unique worldbuilding. (Actually I’m currently writing a fairy tale retelling.)

So when my friend RJ was looking for people to share the cover of her new frog prince retelling I jumped on it. RJ Conte is an amazing author who has a talent for writing relatable characters. I can’t wait to see what she brings to this timeless story.

Kiss a frog and get a dreamy prince – every princess’s recipe for happily ever after… right?

Not for Revelle, second daughter of the king of Aileh. This girl’s got no time for marriage. She’s got a secret dream of being queen.

When a mischievous Fairy brings a reluctant Revelle a prince cursed to be a frog, the princess does her duty and kisses him, but then she wants him gone. However, he’s a visiting royal far from home, and he has his eyes on winning her hand. She’s got to admit the handsome blond dude isn’t hard on the eyes, but she’s got other plans in the works – like convincing the council to be open to the idea of a female monarch next year when her father retires. Leon, former frog prince, seems to be turning out to be an eager ally, but his ideas about how their enemies in Fairy Reservation are being treated are messing with Revelle’s head. Seems like being queen AND getting the guy is impossible – or is it?

If this sounds like a fairy tale rom-com that you’d enjoy, then be sure to pre order here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09782BTMX

Hurry the book releases June 21st.

About the author:

RJ Conte has kissed only one boy in her entire life – and she married him – inspiring her to write about sweet or powerful love stories ever since. She writes issue-driven fiction that explores human nature and the depths of the soul while pointing readers to their Creator.

She writes a blog on parenting, publishing, painting, and perorating at http://blonderj.wordpress.com

Amok Cover Reveal

Thanks to self publishing and the rise of the online marketplace, you can buy books written by authors from all over the world. Today’s book is written by an author who lives in Malaysia. I had the pleasure of beta reading this book and it was amazing. I’ll have a full review closer to the release date for you. But until then, rest assured that this cover is every bit as amazing as the story.

What is faith, except hope in desperation?

All Putera Mikal wants is to gain the Amok Strength, the supernatural power granted by Kudus to the Mahan royal family. No matter how religiously Mikal keeps his vows, Kudus still denies him the Strength—whilst his father, Sultan Simson, flaunts the Strength despite his blatant defiance of the Temple and the priests’ visions of coming doom.

Then the prophecies come true.

Taken captive, Mikal must find a way to liberate his people and restore his throne in Maha—and the key to this is the Amok Strength. But what does it take to gain Kudus’ favour?

Secrets in the Mist: Cover Reveal

I’m excited to join in the Cover Reveal of Secrets in the Mist by Morgan L Busse releasing from Enclave publishing in August 2021! This is the first book in the YA steampunk Skyworld duology and is available to preorder in Limited-Edition Hardcover.

I absolutely loved The Soul Chronicles, Busse’s previous foray into the Steampunk genre. While it looks like Secrets in the Mist is going to take place in a new story world it looks like it will have a similar dark tone. And I’m sure it will have more of Busse’s deep character development and attention to world building.

The cover was designed by Emilie Hendryx, who you can find on instagram as @createexploreread, and it is spectacularly steampunk.

Secrets in the Mist by Morgan L. Busse. Sky world: book one.

What’s lurking in the Mist is the least of their worries…

In a world where humanity lives in the sky to escape a deadly mist below, Cass’s only goal is survival. That is, until she finds a job on the airship Daedalus as a diver. Now she explores ruined cities, looking for treasure and people’s lost heirlooms until a young man hires her to find the impossible: a way to eradicate the Mist.

Theodore Winchester is a member of one of the Five Families that rule the skies. Following in his father’s footsteps, he searches for the source of the deadly Mist and hopes to stop the purges used to control overpopulation.
