Halloween update: Spooky audiobook rec, Spooky facebook event, & Kickstarter Launching soon!

Hello again, readers. I have a bunch of things going on and no newsletter to share them in. Though if you signed up to receive this in your inbox, then it is kind of like a newsletter.

First up is an audiobook Rec that’s perfect for Spooky season: Haunted House Flippers by K.L. Brooks.

A haunted house is hard to flip—unless you’re Sam and Haley.

He’s a golden-hearted contractor. She’s a deadpan realtor with a gift for seeing ghosts. Together, they flip America’s most possessed properties.

In this funny paranormal short story collection, Sam and Haley tackle six fixer-uppers with serious supernatural baggage:

  • In a 1980s Tudor revival, a flying set of keys kicks off an unexpected meet-cute
  • A 1920s mansion hides something deeply wrong in a mirror
  • Spiders aren’t the worst thing in this 1840s cabin—a ghost keeps using Haley as a time-share
  • Gremlins have taken over an 1880s Queen Anne Victorian, and they are not house-trained
  • A 1970s ranch still echoes with the heartbreak of its resident rockstar
  • Sam’s late grandmother is still calling the shots from beyond in a 1901 farmhouse

Each house needs more than just a coat of paint—they need an intervention or maybe an exorcism.

Perfect for fans of Ghosts, What We Do in the Shadows, and cozy paranormal comedies that make you laugh out loud.

Tour the houses. Meet the spirits. And maybe fall a little in love with the weird along the way.

My thoughts:

Haunted House Flippers, by K.L. Brooks, is written like a TV show. Lots of Dialogue and very straightforward descriptions. It feels more like a converted Script than something written to be a book.
The dialogue is witty and perfectly shows the personality of the two protagonists.
The concept of a couple who only renovate and flip haunted houses is a clever idea. I would really love to see this turned into a fake reality show.
Since the chapters are written as episodes the novella reads more like a collection of short stories rather than a cohesive plot which worked out perfectly for using this audiobook on my commute to work as I could listen a whole “episode” on my drive.
There is continuity throughout and even though the novel lacks a traditional plot it does build on what came before until it reaches a satisfying end.
The narrator, Ian Morgan, was very good and he pulled off the gimmick of the TV show voice over really well.

I received a free audible code from the author via booksprout. The above review is my own personal evaluation of the provided material.

My story is in the green anthology, It’s Dangerous to Grow Alone, and is called Game Therapy. It’s about a group of burnt out adventurers who play TTRPGS to get through their issues. I can’t wait for everyone to read it.
